Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Prince Albert, SK - The Edmonton Oil Kings (10-3-2-1) got a masterful performance between the pipes from Sebastian Cossa on Wednesday night as they defeated the Prince Albert Raiders (5-8-0-1) by a 4-2 score at the Art Hauser Centre.

After being held to just five shots on goal in the first period the night previous, the Oil Kings started this game with much more of a shooter's mentality, firing 13 shots the way of Prince Albert netminder Carter Serhyenko and at the 13:13 mark of the period they opened the scoring.

With the Oil Kings on a power play, Jakub Demek setup Josh Williams for a one-time blast from the right-circle that was deflected over the Raider net but caromed off the end glass to a waiting Simon Kubicek to the left of the Prince Albert crease where he would hoist the puck over the shoulder of Serhyenko for the game's icebreaker. Kubicek's fifth goal of the year would hold up as the only goal of the opening 20 minutes.

In the second period, the Oil Kings stretched their lead to 3-0 in short order getting goals from Carter Souch and Dylan Guenther just 38-seconds apart. Souch made it two goal lead at the 1:49 mark as he collected the puck in the neutral zone, skated diagonally into the left-wing circle of the Raiders zone and snapped a shot short-side past Serhyenko.

Souch would then be instrumental in setting up Guenther for his team leading eight goal of the year as he got in on a forecheck, stole the puck from a Prince Albert defender and slit in front for Guenther to wire home with a one-timer.

The Oil Kings ran into penalty trouble in the frame, surrendering three power play chances to the Raiders but were able to kill them off thanks in large part to Cossa kicking aside all 22 shots he faced in the period from the Raiders to preserve the Oil Kings three goal lead through 40 minutes.

In the third period, the Oil Kings continued their parade to the penalty box giving the Raiders three more power play opportunities, and this time they'd connect on two of them. Just 1:49 into the third, Reece Vitelli was able to muscle the puck home on a goal mouth scramble to pull Prince Albert to within two. Late in the third period, the Raiders would make it a one goal game as Hayden Pakkala tucked in another power play marker with 2:24 left on the clock. Any hope of a comeback for the Raiders was snuffed out in the final minute though when Jakub Demek was able to hit the empty net for his eight goal of the season to make it a 4-2 final.

Cossa stood tall in the Edmonton crease turning in a season-high 41 saves, while Serhyenko make 33 saves in the losing cause. The Oil Kings went 1-for-1 on the power play, while the Raiders were 2-for-7.

Next up, the Oil Kings continue their four-game Saskatchewan trek with a stop in Regina to battle Connor Bedard and the Pats Friday night at 6:00 P.M. You can catch all the action at oilkings.ca/radio.
