No Passengers on Rebels Bench in Win over Warriors

Red Deer Rebels News Release

MOOSE JAW - It's a well-worn cliche, but the Red Deer Rebels' 5-2 WHL win over the Moose Jaw Warriors Tuesday night was a total team effort.

"It was a good win. Our guys played with emotion and energy and all of them contributed," said Rebels head coach Steve Konowalchuk following the contest viewed by 2,231 fans at Mosaic Place.

"That team over there played hard too and we had to play a good game to beat them."

Next to Ben King, who notched a pair of goals, netminder Chase Coward was the Rebels' best player, turning in a solid 29-save outing that included first-period breakaway stops on Eric Alarie and Atley Calvert.

"Cowey made some big saves for us," said Konowalchuk.

King provided the visitors with a 1-0 lead after one period. With the Rebels on the power play, Arshdeep Bains fed King from the corner and the veteran centre made no mistake with a quick snap shot from the left circle.

Carter Anderson doubled Red Deer's lead early in the middle frame following a defensive gaffe inside the Warriors blueline.

The Warriors got on the board at the 14:09 mark as Brayden Jaeger scored on a one-timer from the left circle during a pressure shift that was followed by more Moose Jaw heat to close out the period.

"In the second period we got soft on pucks and gave them a little momentum at times," said Konowalchuk. "They made a push but we got back to it in the third and played a real solid game."

The Rebels opened the final period on a positive note as Jhett Larson raced down the left side on a two-on-one with King and beat netminder Carl Tetachuk to the far side of the net in the first minute.

"They (Warriors) create a lot from the back end. Sometimes you feel they're bringing some energy but on the other hand you get some odd man rushes out of it and that can definitely open up the game a bit," said Konowalchuk.

Moose Jaw responded shortly after with a power play marker from Denton Mateychuk, who moved down from the point and picked the top corner from 12 feet out.

But that was it for the Warriors, who gave up a late goal to King - off a nifty give-and-go with Bains - and an empty net tally to Liam Keeler with the home side enjoying a six-on-four advantage with Rebels rearguard Jace Weir in the penalty box and Tetachuk on the bench.

Notable: Tetachuk made 35 saves in a losing cause . . . Both teams were one-for-three with a man advantage . . . King's first period power play goal was his league-leading eighth of the season . . . He was selected as the game's first star, followed by (2) Mateychuk and (3) Coward . . . The Rebels improved to 2-2-0-0 on their six-game road trip that continues Wednesday versus the Regina Pats. Red Deer will visit the Prince Albert Raiders Friday to close out the jaunt . . . The Rebels' next home game is Nov. 19 against the Calgary Hitmen.
