Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings dropped a tight checking affair with the Red Deer Rebels on Sunday afternoon at Rogers Place.
The Rebels grabbed a quick lead thanks to a shorthanded goal from Carson Latimer just 3:05 into the game after the veteran forward raced on to a loose puck in the Edmonton zone, looped behind the net and executed a perfectly timed wraparound at the near post.
Just over five minutes later, the Oil Kings were able to answer back after Rilen Kovacevic roofed a hot shot from the right-circle beating Red Deer netminder Chase Wutzke over the glove hand.
Just past the midway mark of the first period, the Rebels special teams gave them another lead courtesy Latimer's second goal of the period after he tipped in a point shot from Hunter Mayo on a Red Deer power play.
The Oil Kings outshot the Rebels 14-7 in the first period but had to settle for a one-goal deficit at the first intermission.
In the second period, the Rebels would outshoot the Oil Kings 13-6 but thanks to some fine goaltending from Kolby Hay, the score remained at just 2-1 in favour of the visitors through 40 minutes of action.
Early in the third period, the Oil Kings came within inches of tying the game with a shorthanded goal after Marshall Finnie streaked into the right circle of the Red Deer zone and rifled a shot through Wutzke but off the post and out. Just seconds later, the Rebels came down the ice extended their lead on a goal from Carson Birnie after he got the last touch on a puck in a goal mouth scramble.
Midway through the third, the Oil Kings did get back to within goal after Aidan Litke shelved a shot from just inside the Red Deer blueline but that was as close as the Oil Kings would get after Frantisek Formanek put Red Deer back up by two with 2:36 left in regulation time and Kai Uchacz salted away the win for the visitors with an empty netter in the waning seconds.
Hay finished the night making 29 saves for the Oil Kings, while Wutzke turned in 33 saves for the Rebels. Edmonton went 0-for-5 on the power play, Red Deer was 2-for-4.
