Edmonton Oil Kings News Release

Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings have acquired 2002-born forward Noah Boyko, a 2023 third-round draft pick and a conditional 2026 third-round draft pick from the Prince George Cougars in exchange for 2002-born forward Jaxsen Wiebe and a conditional 2026 eighth-round draft pick, the team announced today.

Boyko, 20, is a Fort Saskatchewan, AB product and has appeared in 22 games this season with the Cougars, registering 10 points (5G, 5A), four penalty minutes and a +1 plus/minus rating.

"We are happy to be welcoming Noah into our organization," said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. "It is always nice when you have the ability to add local players to your lineup who are familiar with the city and club. Noah is a former first-round pick in the WHL and has a lot of offensive ability to his game.

"He will be asked to provide leadership to our younger group of players and help provide offense on our power play and at even-strength. We look forward to having Noah in our line-up Wednesday night."

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward was originally drafted by the Lethbridge Hurricanes in the first round, 16th overall, of the 2017 WHL Draft.

In his WHL career, he has played in 197 games and has put up 94 points (48G, 46A), 62 penalty minutes and a -9 plus/minus rating as a member of the Lethbridge Hurricanes, Saskatoon Blades and Prince George Cougars.

In 2017, he helped lead the U15 AAA Fort Saskatchewan Rangers to the AMBHL championship after tallying 52 points (25G, 27A) in 33 regular-season games and an additional 18 points (7G, 11A) in 14 post-season contests.

Wiebe, 20, was in his second season with the Oil Kings after being acquired from the Red Deer Rebels in the summer of 2021. In six games this year, he has four points (3G, 1A), 32 penalty minutes and an even plus/minus rating.

Originally drafted by the Rebels in the seventh round, 141st overall, of the 2017 WHL Draft, Wiebe has gone on to suit up in 130 career WHL games, scoring 60 points (22G, 38A) to go along with 225 penalty minutes and a +8 plus/minus rating.

Last season, he played in 13 post-season games and added eight points (2G, 6A) for the Oil Kings on route to the team capturing the 2022 WHL Championship. At the 2022 Memorial Cup, he was tied for the team lead in scoring with four points (3G, 1A) in three games.

"The Edmonton Oil Kings would like to thank Jaxsen for all his contributions to the organization both on and off the ice." Added Hill. "Jaxsen made an immediate impact on our roster when we acquired him in the summer of 2021. His hard hitting and high compete style of play made him a fan favorite in Edmonton and will give him the chance to have a long runway in the game moving forward.

"Not only was Jaxen a big part of our Championship run last season, but he has played a mentorship role for our young core of players this season. His Memorial Cup hat-trick will be something that will be remembered by anyone associated with the Oil Kings for a long time."

The Oil Kings thank Jaxsen for his commitment to the organization both on and off the ice and wish him the best of luck with his new team.
