Winterhawks Weekly: Hawks Look to Bounce Back on Home Ice
November 28, 2022 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Portland Winterhawks News Release
The Winterhawks kicked off the Thanksgiving slate with a big win in Everett on Wednesday, but stumbles in Seattle and Vancouver dealt the team back-to-back regulation losses for the first time this season.
Still the top-ranked team in the conference, the 17-3-1-1 Hawks are on home ice for two games during the upcoming week - including a Battle With Seattle on Wednesday - before heading back up to Everett to take on the 'Tips on Saturday.
Hot Hawks:
Forward Dawson Pasternak snapped a three-game pointless skid with the game-winning goal and an assist in Wednesday's victory over Everett for his third multi-point performance of the year.
Forward Gabe Klassen set up Marek Alscher's tally on Wednesday, then grabbed his team-leading 15th goal of the season on Friday. The Hawks' captain is up to 22 points in just 18 games played this year.
Defenseman Carter Sotheran picked up two assists on Wednesday to continue a strong start to his rookie season. The first-year blueliner leads all WHL rookie defensemen with one goal and 11 assists through 22 games played
Defenseman Luca Cagnoni tallied two assists last week and leads all Winterhawks defensemen with eight goals, 13 assists and 21 points in 22 games.
Defenseman Josh Mori skated as a forward in two games last week and picked up his first goal of the season against Everett on Wednesday.
Play of the Week:
Marcus Nguyen combined spectacularly with Josh Mori for the latter's first goal of the season on Wednesday, and it's worth another look.
As Nguyen receives a stretch pass in the neutral zone from Carter Sotheran at the Hawks goal line, he delays his zone entry to back off the defense of Everett and buy some space. Then, he attacks the space, deftly stickhandling through the feet and stick of the 'Tips' defender before sending a lightning-quick dish over to Mori for the one-time blast. Blink, and you'll miss it - what a play by Nguyen and Mori!
Weekly Rewind:
Portland 5 at Everett 2 (Wednesday):
Five different skaters lit the lamp as the Winterhawks (17-1-1-1) picked up their ninth consecutive victory with a 5-2 win over the Everett Silvertips (12-8-1-0) on Wednesday.
Portland 1 at Seattle 6 (Friday):
Gabe Klassen tallied his team-leading 15th goal of the year, but the Winterhawks (17-2-1-1) came up short in Seattle as the Thunderbirds (15-3-1-0) took a 6-1 victory on Friday to beat Portland for the first time this season.
Portland 1 at Vancouver 3 (Sunday):
The Winterhawks (17-3-1-1) scored first and Dante Giannuzzi was solid with 35 saves, but the Vancouver Giants (9-10-2-2) grabbed three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 win on Sunday afternoon.
The loss marks the first time Portland has suffered consecutive regulation defeats this season.
The Week Ahead:
After spending the holiday week on the road, the Hawks are back on home ice for a pair of games before firing up the bus once again on Saturday.
