Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB - The Edmonton Oil Kings have acquired 2004-born forward Rilen Kovacevic from the Kelowna Rockets in exchange for 2002-born forward Carson Golder and a 2023 third-round draft pick, the team announced today.
Kovacevic, 18, is a Kelowna, BC product and has appeared in 20 games this season with the Rockets, registering nine points (5G, 4A), 31 penalty minutes and a -5 plus/minus rating.
"We are very excited to be welcoming Rilen to our core group of young players," said Oil Kings President of Hockey Operations and General Manager Kirt Hill. "It's difficult to acquire players in transactions involving 20-year-olds, so having the opportunity add an 18-year-old with a lot of upside to our lineup was very attractive to our club.
"His 200-foot game, offensive upside and will to compete every night made him a good fit as a player to add to our group."
The 5-foot-11, 180-pound winger was originally drafted by the Rockets in the 10th round, 204th overall, of the 2019 WHL Draft.
In 77 career WHL games, he has 16 points (8G, 8A), 115 penalty minutes and a -13 plus/minus rating.
Golder, 20, has appeared in 70 games as an Oil King after being acquired from the Victoria Royals in the summer of 2021.
During his tenure in Edmonton, he tallied 27 points (11G, 16A), a +2 plus/minus rating and 38 penalty minutes.
Golder proved to be a versatile player for the Oil Kings last year and a key contributor to their 2022 WHL Championship run after starting the season as a defenceman, he lined up as a forward for most of last year's playoffs and would go on to lead the WHL Championship Series in scoring with six points (1G, 5A) in six games.
"The Oil Kings organization would like to wish Carson all the best moving forward in his hockey career," added Hill. "Carson was a big part of our championship run last season by being able to play both forward and defence in critical moments. He has been off to a great start this season and will have a big opportunity in front of him in Kelowna."
The Oil Kings thank Carson for his dedication to the organization and community of Edmonton over the past two seasons and wish him the best of luck with his new team.
