Brockton Rox News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT-1B Francisco Lebron broke a Rox 22-inning scoreless drought in the ninth inning with an RBI single but a double-play ground out one batter later killed the rally hopes of the Rox who fell to the New Haven County Cutters 3-1 in the first game of a three- game series before 1,063 at Yale Field in West Haven, CT. Despite a strong start for RHP Brad Guy, who went seven innings and struck out seven, the Rox fell for the third straight night. LHP Rolando Valles earned the win for the Cutters, allowing just a single run in 8.1 innings while RHP Andy Weimer earned his 15th save of the season for New Haven County. The Rox are now 19-15 in the second half and 43-37 overall.

The Cutters struck for their first run in the top of the first against Guy. With CF Marcus Nettles at second base, DH Derrick Gibson singled down the left field line to plate Nettles. In the third, Gibson led off with a double and scored on a gap-shot double by SS Chas Terni to give New Haven County a 2-0 lead. Terni scored on C Sandy DeLeon's two-out RBI single to center and the Cutters had their 3-0 lead after four.

For the 16th time in 18 starts, Guy lasted seven innings on the hill. His quality start was his 13th of the season. Trailing 3-0 in the ninth, SS Mike Scanzano drilled a single to left-center, and DH Guye Senjem was hit by a pitch to end Valles's night. Lebron smoked his second hit of the game, a single to center, straight into center to score Scanzano. C Jason Radwan grounded into a double play to end the game.

Tomorrow, RHP John Kelly (10-2, 2.68 ERA) takes the mound, trying to end the Rox losing streak and become the first Can-Am League pitcher in 2006 to win 11 games. He faces off against New Haven County RHP Courtney Hall (2-4, 4.18 ERA) for the first pitch at 7:05 PM at Yale Field.
