Cutters' ace Rolando Valles shuts down Rox, 3-1

WEST HAVEN, CT - In the first game of a crucial three-game series against the Brockton Rox (19-15, 43-36), starter LHP Rolando Valles (7-5) tossed a gem in the New Haven County Cutters' (18-15, 43-35) 3-1 victory, Tuesday night, at Historic Yale Field.

Valles allowed one run on six hits and struck out six in 8.1 innings to push the Cutters to a game in front of the Rox in the Wild Card standings. He retired 14 of 15 batters at one point including a stretch of 11 in a-row.

Valles took a 3-0 lead into the ninth inning before putting runners on first and second base with one out. RHP Andy Weimer relieved Valles and surrendered an RBI single to first baseman Francisco Lebron before inducing a game-ending double play to record the save (15).

Rox' starter RHP Brad Guy (7-5) took the loss in a strong performance, allowing three runs on nine hits and struck out seven in 7.0 innings.

The Cutters took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single from designated hitter Derrick Gibson.

Doubles by Gibson and shortstop Chas Terni in the fourth inning, followed by an RBI single from catcher Sandy DeLeon, opened up a 3-0 advantage for the Cutters.

Gibson and Terni, overall, went 2-for-4 with a run scored and RBI.

Game two of the three-game series is scheduled for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.

RHP Courtney Hall (2-4, 4.18 ERA) gets the call for the Cutters while the Rox send RHP John Kelly (8-0, 1.82 ERA) to the mound.
