New Haven County Cutters News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT- The New Haven County Cutters got home-runs from CF Ervin Alcantara and RF Orlando Encarnacion to defeat the New Jersey Jackals Saturday night at Historic Yale Field 4-3.

Encarnacion's sixth home-run of the year in the seventh inning broke the 3-3 tie between the two teams in what had been a game primarily dominated by pitching. Two Veterans Rolando Valles and Joel Bennett squared off against one another using strong defense and timely strikeouts to get themselves out of jams throughout the ball game.

Valles (5-5) picked up the win as he pitched seven strong innings, allowing just three runs, none of which were earned. All the Jackals runs came in the third inning after a costly error by 3B Matt Mercurio and doubles by Sandy Madera and Wilton Veras of New Jersey.

Kevin Fitzgerald (3-4) suffered the loss after giving up the long ball to Encarnacion in relief of Bennett. Andy Weimer picked up his second consecutive save in the ninth, his 19th of the season.

The Cutters jumped in front early thanks to an RBI single by Jeremy Pickrel in the first that scored Alcantara. Alcantara's homer in the fifth brought the Cutters within one at 3-2 and Kevin Whiteside delivered the tying RBI later in the inning scoring Jeremy Pickrel.

The Cutters will play game two of the three game series tomorrow at 5:05 P.M. at Historic Yale Field. Trevor Marcotte (0-1) will get his third start as a member of the Cutters. Josh Brey (5-6) will throw for the Jackals.
