September 1, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Brockton Rox News Release
Atlantic City, NJ (September 1, 2007) - Rox LHP Rolando Viera struck out 10 batters in five innings his final start of the season but Atlantic City plated 12 runs off the Rox pitching staff in a 12-4 Surf win in the series opener in Atlantic City, NJ. The Surf scored four runs in the first and never trailed. LF Jeremy Coronado had a three-hit night for the Rox in the loss and CF Matt Maloney had a two- run HR. Every Surf starter had at least one hit while DH Clyde Williams drove in five runs. Surf starter LHP Brian Rodaway established a Can-Am League record with his 15th win of the season. The Rox have just two games left to play in 2007; they are 41-50 overall, 21-24 in the second half.
Rodaway worked out of a jam in the Rox half of the first, and the Surf took the lead early in the game. Viera allowed a single to CF Lucas Taylor and a one-out RBI double by LF Ed Montague made it 1-0 Surf. With two outs, the Surf scored three unearned runs against Viera when DH Clyde Williams ripped a line-drive three-run HR over the left field wall.
Trailing 4-0, the Rox scored a run in the third inning when Coronado singled, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on DH John Allen's RBI single. Trailing 6-1 in the top of the sixth, the Rox mounted their best rally of the night against RHP Kevin Brower. RF Tony Gonzalez walked and CF Matt Maloney hit a tape-measure HR over the left-field wall to cut the deficit to 6-3. One batter later, 3B Melvin Falu sliced a triple into the right-field corner, and ended Brower's night. RHP Jamie Tricgolou came in and while SS Jorge Mejia had a sac fly to cut the Surf lead to two, the Rox offense was done for the night.
Viera finished five innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on two hits and 10 strikeouts. The Surf scored four runs off RHP Kevin Foeman in the sixth inning and two more off RHP Jon Koch in the eighth inning. The Rox have allowed 39 runs in the three losses at Bernie Robbins Stadium in Atlantic City in 2007. Coronado, Allen, and Mejia combined for seven of the nine Rox hits, as Falu had his 17th multi-hit game of the season.
Sunday night in Atlantic City LHP Bryan Morse (4-6, 4.34 ERA) starts for Brockton against RHP J.C. Huguet (9-5, 4.33 ERA) for the Surf. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
