Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Quebec City, Quebec -- Quebec righty Keith Dunn came within two outs of a complete game shutout, as the Worcester Tornadoes managed just 6 singles in a 6-1 loss to the Capitales in the series opener at Le Stade Municipal on Saturday night.

Quebec cracked the scoreboard early, getting to righty Ryan Mitchell (3-4) for three runs in the 1st inning. Mitchell retired the first two batters he faced, but then ran into trouble. Ivan Naccarata doubled, Eddie Lantigua walked and Pat Scalabrini grounded a single to leftfield plating Naccarata. After a walk to Greg Stevens loaded the bases, Patrick Deschenes brought two more runs home with a soft line single to left-center that made it 3-0, Quebec. The Capitales took advantage of shoddy Worcester defense, using an Omar Pena error to score 2 unearned runs in the 4th and a Rico Santana error at third base to tack on another unearned run in the 7th for a 6-0 lead.

Dunn (9-5) took care of the rest. He scattered just 3 singles through the first 8 innings, retiring 11 in a row at one point. He was finally lifted with one out in the 9th after allowing 3 singles to load the bases. Brandon Pello came on and walked Mike DeCarlo, forcing in a run, but bounced back to strike out Keith Beauregard and induce a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop off the bat of Mike MacMIllan to end it.

Dunn (9-5) picked up the win and Mitchell (3-4) took the loss. Dunn hit Dominic Ramos in the face with a 1-2 pitch leading off the ballgame. Ramos never lost consciousness, but left the game and required 5 stitches to close a gash in his lip. Andrew Wishy pinch-ran for Ramos and stayed in to play rightfield with Rico Santana moving to third base and Mike MacMillan shifting to second base. Both Santana and MacMillan were charged with errors at their new positions. The Capitales ripped 13 hits in the game, the fourth straight game in which Tornadoes pitching has allowed 13 hits or more. The loss drops Worcester to a season-high 8 games below .500 (42-50) on the season. The Tornadoes will try even the series at one win apiece and knock the Capitales out of playoff contention (Quebec's "tragic number" is 1) when the teams play Game Two of their three-game season-concluding series in Quebec on Sunday night. Righty Alex Pena will get the start on three-days rest for Worcester and he will be opposed by Quebec righty T.J. Stanton. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
