New Haven County Cutters News Release
WEST HAVEN, CT- The New Haven County Cutters ended their 2007 season on a four game winning streak, completing a sweep of the New Jersey Jackals Monday afternoon with a convincing 10-6 victory at Historic Yale Field.
The Cutters used three home runs to score seven of their ten runs Monday. Cutters RF Orlando Encarnacion hit a two-run home run to start things off in the bottom of the second inning to put the Cutters in front for good at 2-1. 2B Matt Mercurio hit his fourth home run of the season four batters later, a three-run blast that cleared the left field wall to give the Cutters a 5-1 lead and they were never threatened after that.
The Cutters increased their lead to 10-3 as 1B Chris Gaskin hit his eighth long ball of the season in the fifth inning scoring DH Jeremy Pickrel. Pickrel, before the game was named the New Haven Register Cutters Player of the Year. Bucky Kosyk was named the New Haven Register Cutters pitcher of the year.
Gaskin, Mercurio and Encarnacion each had two hits off Jackal's pitching for the Cutters, SS Chas Terni finished the afternoon three-for-four with two runs scored and an RBI.
Oddly enough the game started off on the wrong foot for the Cutters as starter Kevin Culpepper gave up an early run in the first before leaving with an apparent shoulder injury. Matt Salvato (2-2) came in though and picked up the win in relief pitching five strong innings of four-hit baseball holding the Jackals to just two runs. The Jackals would get a couple of runs off Adam Piechowski in the seventh and eighth innings to make things seem a little closer, but the Cutters were never truly in danger of losing after taking the lead in the second.
Jackal's starter Kevin Ool (3-3) was dismal as he lasted just four innings, surrendering eight runs on seven hits including two home runs. He also hit a batter and wound up with the loss. The Cutters with the victory finished the season above .500 at 47-46 and finished third in the second-half standings at 26-20, leaving Cutters fans everywhere to ponder what could have been if it hadn't been for a horrific start to the season. The Jackals meanwhile limp into the playoffs Wednesday at Nashua having lost six straight and 10 out of their last 11.
