
Madera, Simard Named Players Of The Week

DURHAM, NC - New Jersey Jackals DH Sandy Madera and Quebec Capitales RHP Michel Simard were named by PA-Sportsticker, the official statistician of the Can-Am League, as the Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, for August 27th-September 2nd.
This is the second Player of the Week award for Madera this season. In five games, Madera hit .421 (8-for-19) with three home runs, 11 RBI, four doubles and eight runs scored. He also slugged 1.105 and had an on-base percentage of .476. For the season, the 27-year-old Madera is batting .364 with 21 home runs, 75 RBI, 125 hits and 69 runs scored. He is first in the Can-Am in home runs, slugging percentage (.615) and extra base hits (44), tied for first in batting average, second in RBI and hits and fifth in runs scored.
The Hyattsville, MD resident was a nondrafted free agent signee of the Oakland Athletics in February of 1998. Along with the Athletics, Madera also played in the New York Yankees, Colorado Rockies and Baltimore Orioles organizations.
Simard had a tremendous start this past Friday in a 7-1 win over the Nashua Pride. The Charlesbourg, QC resident went the distance giving up only one earned run on five hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Currently, Simard is 9-8 with a 3.53 earned run average in 19 starts. He has 84 strikeouts in 127 1/3 innings pitched and has four complete games, second best in the Can-Am.
The 25-year-old was a 25th round pick of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2002 MLB draft. He pitched the previous four seasons in the Angels organization before coming to the Capitales in 2007.
