Brockton Rox News Release
Atlantic City, NJ (September 3, 2007) - RHP Mike McTamney threw a complete-game three-hit shutout and 1B Jerod Edmondson hit two solo homers in his first two at-bats as the Rox ended the season on a winning note with a 10-0 win over Atlantic City on the season's final day. McTamney established a Can-Am League record by making his 22nd start of the season against the Atlantic City Surf and his nine innings on the hill gave him the 2007 innings title as well as his sixth win of the season. Edmondson's round-trippers were his first two professional HR, and 3B Melvin Falu added a grand-slam in the win. The Rox snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory and finished the year with a 42-51 overall record.
After a scoreless first inning, the Rox struck in the second with Edmondson's first blast, a line drive HR over the left-field wall. In the third, CF Jeremy Cornonado and 2B Alex Nunez had back-to-back RBI singles against starter RHP Coogie Freedman to put the Rox up 3-0. Edmondson's first professional HR took 132 at-bats, but his second took just two more pitches, as another solo HR for the rookie gave the Rox a 4-0 lead.
In the fifth, the Rox blew the game open. DH John Allen walked with the bases loaded and Edmondson drove in his third run of the night with a sac fly to make it 6-0 Rox. With the bases loaded against RHP Monte Mansfield, Falu crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam as the Rox took a 10-0 lead.
McTamney rarely faced trouble in the game. He allowed just a single baserunner from the third through the seventh, at one point retiring 17 of 19 hitters. He worked around a jam in the eighth and pitched a perfect ninth for his second complete-game shutout of the season.
The Rox finished the season with a 42-51 overall record; 20-26 in the first half of play, 22-25 in the second half. 2007 is the first season that the Rox have not qualified for postseason play since 2004. In six years, the Rox now have a cumulative record of 278-269. Many Rox players had standout individual seasons, with 1B Francisco Lebron capturing team MVP honors, LHP Rolando Viera winning Rox Pitcher of the Year accolades, and C Lee Rubin was named the Rox Most Improved Player. The Can-Am League honored RHP John Kelly as a member of the 2007 Can-Am League Postseason All-Star Team and OF Tony Gonzalez was named Can-Am League Rookie of the Year.
