Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - K.C. Herren's second inning two-run blast provided the only runs for Clinton's sluggish offense as the LumberKings dropped a fifth-straight game, 4-2 to the Cedar Rapids Kernels.

Herren's shot traveled 373 feet into the right field Lumber Lounge to put the L-Kings ahead 2-1. The score remained that way until the top of the seventh, when the Kernels put up three runs off reliever Gerry Oakes to take a 4-2 lead. Two of the three runs came across on a costly throwing error by L-Kings shortstop Matt Smith. Oakes (L, 0-1) took the loss, despite allowing one earned run on one hit.

Kernels starter Stephen Marek (W, 6-1) nearly went the distance, pitching 8 2/3 innings of four-hit baseball. The Herren homer was the only blemish on Marek's line, as he also set down nine L-Kings hitters with strikeouts. Closer Ryan Aldridge (S, 1) pitched the final third of the inning to preserve the win.

Righthander Kyle Rogers pitched well through five innings for the LumberKings, picking up the no-decision. Rogers struck out a season-high nine batters and allowed just one run on six hits.

The five-game losing streak ties a season high for the LumberKings, who are now 18-34. Cedar Rapids improves to 24-28 on the season. The four-game series concludes tomorrow night at Alliant Energy Field, first pitch scheduled for 7:00 pm. Listen to the game on AM 1340 KROS in Clinton, or live on the web at www.lumberkings.com.
