MWL1 Cedar Rapids Kernels

Kernels weather rain, umps, extra frames to win third straight

Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

The Kernels exploded for three runs in the 13th inning and withstood a late Clinton rally to nail the LumberKings 5-4 on Tuesday night at Alliant Energy Field.

Moments after Kernels pitching coach Kernan Ronan told designated hitter Flint Wipke to buy reliever Chris Howell more time, Wipke started the final frame by lining a leadoff triple to right off Julian Cordero (2-4) to spark the attack. Wipke would score when Clinton shortstop Matt Smith booted a Brett Martinez grounder. Hainley Statia added an RBI triple before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Brad Coon.

The extra run plated by Coon was pivotal as Clinton's John Mayberry, Jr. crushed a Howell offering over a new picnic pavilion in left field to pull the LumberKings back within one run, but Howell retired the next three batters in a row to earn his second save in as many days.

The win by the Kernels (24-28) was the team's third straight, a feat the club had not accomplished in over three weeks. Right-hander Tim Mattison (2-3) picked up the win with three innings of scoreless, one-hit relief.

The game, which started over 1 hour and 30 minutes late due to weather, began as a pitcher's duel between Kernels starter Nick Adenhart and Clinton hurler Omar Poveda. Both starters worked seven innings and allowed two runs each while combining for 15 strikeouts.

Clinton jumped to an early lead off the Kernels ace despite not getting a hit until the third inning when Smith, who reached on a leadoff walk, scored on a strike three passed ball by Martinez.

A Dallas Morris double in the third helped erase the brief Clinton lead after he scored on a sacrifice fly by Martinez.
