Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

The Swing of the Quad Cities took a pair of seven-inning games from the Beloit Snappers at Pohlman Field on Wednesday, winning the opener, 7-3, before shutting out the home team in the nightcap, 3-0. Jaime Garcia and Trey Hearne each earned wins for the Swing, as Brian Stitt closed the door in game two after failing to convert his first save opportunity of the season in the series opener on Monday night.

Quad Cities (22-28) evened up their record in doubleheader games to 4-4, making up for a twin bill in Burlington on May 13 in which the Bees swept the Swing. Beloit (25-27) falls to two games under .500 with the loss.

After having one the opener Quad Cities could smell the potential sweep heading into game two, and slowly chipped away against the Beloit pitching staff.

Daniel Nelson, Casey Rowlett, and Colby Rasmus combined to go 7-for-10 in the game with one double and two runs scored atop the Swing batting lineup, helping Quad Cities post single runs in the first, third, and fourth innings. The 3-0 lead would be plenty for the Swing relief corps Wednesday night.

Jonathan Mikrut (2-1) snatched the win with two perfect relief innings, striking out one and retiring all six batters he faced. Brian Stitt (4) then came on for a perfect ninth inning, as the Swing staff set down the last 12 batters they faced in order.

Trey Hearne was exceptional in the spot start, tossing four scoreless innings while allowing only three singles. The righthander out of Texas A&M Corpus Christi struck out three in the game, but felly one inning shy of qualifying for the win.

In game one, Quad Cities got ahead early and never looked back.

The first two Swing batters in the top of the first went down quietly, but Quad Cities would still find a way to rally. Rasmus found a hole on the right side with a hard groundball and moved to second on a line drive single into left by Randy Roth. Bryan Anderson put the Swing on the board with a line drive single to right, and Adam Rodgers followed suit with a base hit of his own to score Roth. On four consecutive two-out singles, the Swing jumped out to a 2-0 advantage.

In the second they added to the lead. Jose Martinez led off with a double and moved to third on a single by Luis Cotto. Two batters later Rowlett drew a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 3-0. Though Beloit took advantage of a strikeout and a double play to avoid further damage, the Swing had seized early control.

Quad Cities was holding on to a fragile 4-3 lead in the sixth when they put the game away for good. Consecutive singles opened up the inning, and after a fielder's choice the bases were loaded with nobody out. Nelson gave himself up on a suicide squeeze bunt for the first insurance run, and two batters later it was Rasmus coming through with a two-out, two-run single through the right side for the commanding 7-3 margin.

Jaime Garcia (4-3) earned the win in five innings of work, giving up three runs on seven hits. Garcia struck out seven without walking a batter before giving way to Scott Vander Weg for the game's final two innings.

For the Snappers it was Eddie Morlan (2-3) who was saddled with the game one loss. Though he settled down after allowing three runs in the first two innings, the 20-year-old from Miami, Florida was touched for four runs - three earned - with four strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Adam Hawes (1-2) got the short end of the stick in game two, allowing two runs on six hits in three innings of work.
