Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (May 31, 2006) "" The Burlington Bees (26-24) took advantage of four errors by the Wisconsin defense to beat the Timber Rattlers (19-33) 6-3 at Community Field tonight. The Bees are now two games over .500 for the first time this season after winning their ninth straight home game. The Bees lead this series 3-0 and lead 5-1 in the season series against Wisconsin. After starting the month 0-6, the Bees finish May with a 17-11 record. It's the most wins for the Bees in May since going 17-12 in 2002.

The Timber Rattlers scored first in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, JB Tucker walked and scored on a double off the right field wall by Luis Valbuena. It was the first time in ten starts that Carlos Rosa allowed a run in the first inning. The Bees came back with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Valentino Arce led off with a double and scored on a throwing error by Wisconsin starter Jose Escalona on a bouncer by Mario Lisson. Lisson got to second on the wild throw, stole third and scored on a single by Miguel Vega to put the Bees ahead 2-1.

The Rattlers tied the game in the third. Ron Garth drew a leadoff walk, but was thrown out at the plate trying to score on a double by Casey Craig. Craig would steal third and scored on Rosa's first wild pitch of the season to even the score. The Bees went back on top in the bottom of the fifth inning. Escalona hit Chris McConnell with a pitch to start the inning. With Lisson at the plate, McConnell broke for second while Escalona threw behind him at first. The throw to second was in time and on the money, but the shortstop Jeff Dominguez dropped the ball for Wisconsin's third error of the game. Lisson moved McConnell to third with a groundout to second and Vega delivered his second RBI single to put the Bees on top for good at 3-2. Brady Everett followed Vega with a base hit up the middle to knock Escalona out of the game and then Jeremy Jirschele greeted reliever Ruben Flores with a base hit up the middle to drive in Vega and extend the lead to 4-2.

Rosa (5-3) came out after five and picked up his fourth consecutive winning decision over his last five starts. He did walk a season-high five batters while striking out six. Cody Harkcom returned to the mound after eight days off because of illness and worked a scoreless sixth, but came out with the bases loaded and two outs in the seventh. Kraig Schambough got Valbuena to fly out to the wall in right to end the inning and then finished the game for his fourth save. He allowed one run in the top of the ninth without a hit on a hit batsmen, a walk, and two groundouts.

The Bees added a run in the sixth when Ethien Santana laid down a bunt single and went all the way to third when Tucker's throw sailed down the right field line. He later scored as McConnell reached on a fielder's choice. In the eighth, Jeff Gilmore replaced Flores and hit Arce with a pitch. Arce then stole second, went to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a balk.

The Bees will try for a sweep tomorrow night, sending RH David Henninger (1-2, 4.07) to the mound against RH Jason Snyder (2-4, 5.23) of Wisconsin. The game starts at 7:00 and the gates open at six for Thirsty Thursday sponsored by the Sombrero Bar & Grill. Drinks are 2-for-$3 and tomorrow night is the debut of the new "Bees' Apprentice" promotion presented by the Greater Burlington Convention & Visitors Bureau.
