Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
Orem, UT - When the Chukars have scored in the first inning in 2019, the results have usually been positive. That was not the case tonight though, as the CHukars scored one run in the first and did not score the rest of the game. Orem took the lead in the second and never trailed again, edging out the Chukars 3-1. Idaho Falls struck out 15 times for the second straight night, and left ten runners on base.
Idaho Falls wasted no time in getting what would be their only run. Jose Marquez started the inning with a single, and got to second on a stolen base. Rhett Aplin singled to left with two out, scoring Marquez.
The lead did not last long, as a leadoff double from Jeremiah Jackson in the bottom of the first scored on a two out single from Johan Sala. Orem then took the lead in the bottom of the second, scoring a run on three straight singles to start the inning. However, starter Grant Gambrell limited the damage, forcing a double play to end the inning with the bases loaded.
Idaho Falls had plenty of opportunities to tie the game, but left four runners combined in scoring position from the third to the seventh innings. The best chance they had of tying the game came in the fifth inning, when the first two reached against Matt Bower, but he got the next three to end the frame.
Orem scored a critical insurance run in the eighth inning, as with runners at the corners and nobody out, Derrick Adams had Brandon White picked off first. White broke for second, but first baseman Hector Pineda threw the ball into left field, allowing Jose Verrier to score from second to make it 3-1 Orem. Shane Kelso walked Pineda to lead off the ninth, but punched out the next three to end the game.
Tomorrow the Chukars look to get back on track as they send Anthony Veneziano to the hill. First pitch is at 7:05 PM, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of ESPN 980 The Sports Zone beginning at 6:50 PM.
