Offense Derails Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 6-4
July 5, 2015 - International League (IL1)
Buffalo Bisons News Release
Timely offense was key for the Herd on Sunday night's portion of the day/night double-header as they went on to defeat the RailRiders, 6-4, at PNC Field. The Bisons picked up six runs with 12 hits in the victory; just hours after Buffalo failed to record a run in a 4-0 shutout.
The Bisons were leading 4-1 entering the sixth inning and starting pitcher Randy Wolf left the game in line for his sixth victory of the season. Wolf hurled five innings and only gave up one run in the valiant effort.
Wolf's possible victory quickly reverted to a no-decision when Castro gave up a three-run homerun to Juan Graterol in the bottom of the sixth frame to tie the game at four apiece. It was the first time a Buffalo reliever gave up an earned run in the month of July - a stretch of 12 consecutive scoreless innings that began on July 1.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Buffalo offense took over the game once again. The Bisons added two more runs in the inning, beginning with a Luke Scott RBI double and culminating in an Andy Burns RBI groundout.
The bullpen had a very uncharacteristic night, yet efficient enough to preserve the two-run lead. The unit of Castro, Chad Jenkins and Rob Rasmussen combined to give up six hits and three walks through four innings of work, but sustained a two-run lead from the seventh inning on. Castro picked up his first victory of the season as Rasmussen held down his first save of the year.
The bulk of Buffalo's offensive damage came in the third inning, where the team put up four runs in the frame to take an early lead. Burns picked up one of his two RBI in that inning. He and Matt Hague led the team with two RBI each.
Buffalo will finish its series with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Monday before it travels to Rochester to finish off the road trip. Monday's game will begin at 7:05 p.m.
