Syracuse Mets News Release

The Syracuse Chiefs clipped the Pawtucket Red Sox, 4-1, on Sunday evening at NBT Bank Stadium. Kevin Keyes hit his third home run of the season while the bullpen was untouchable en route to the three-run victory.

Syracuse (30-54) scored first in the bottom of the third inning against Pawtucket starter Henry Owens. Chris Nelson led off the frame with a walk. The next batter, Dan Butler, doubled down the left-field line and scored Nelson from first to score the Chiefs' first run. Darin Mastroianni followed with a bunt single down the third-base line to put runners on the corners with no outs. Two batters later, Jason Martinson hit into a fielder's choice to the third baseman Travis Shaw to plate Butler and give the Chiefs a 2-0 lead. With two outs and Martinson on first, Keyes belted a long home run off of the batter's eye in center field to give Syracuse a 4-0 lead after three.

Pawtucket (38-47) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning against P.J. Walters. With one out, Mike Miller tripled into the right-field corner. Luis Martinez stepped in next and lined an RBI single to center field to cut the lead to 4-1.

The Chiefs' bullpen was solid in the win on Sunday evening. Walters was pulled after five innings and one run allowed. However, the Chiefs relievers did not allow a hit in four innings to close out the PawSox. Rafael Martin struck out two in a scoreless sixth inning. Evan Meek tossed two perfect innings while striking out three Pawtucket hitters in the seventh and eighth. Then, Jose Valverde finished it off for his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning to give the Chiefs the victory.

Syracuse seeks a sweep of Pawtucket on Monday afternoon at NBT Bank Stadium. The Chiefs send Joe Ross to the hill against left-hander Brian Johnson for a 1:05 p.m. matinee in Syracuse.
