Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
WINSTON-SALEM N.C. - From the moment C.J. Lee connected with the first pitch of Friday night's series opener with the Winston-Salem Dash, the outcome was anything but in doubt.
Lee's leadoff homer set the tone on a night when four Pelicans cranked round-trippers in a 10-1 win over the Dash at Wake Forest Baseball Park. With the victory, the Pelicans pulled even with Winston-Salem for second place in the Carolina League Southern Division.
The Pelicans got on Winston-Salem starter Jacob Rasner early, touching him for four runs through the first three innings, including Lee's leadoff blast and a two-out solo shot by Gerry Rodriguez in the third. Myrtle Beach again got to Rasner in the sixth, adding three total runs and chasing him with one out. Chris Shehan doubled to open the inning, later scoring on a Rasner wild pitch. That same wild pitch was ball four to Chad Lundahl and served as the right-hander's last delivery of the night. Rasner (3-2) was charged with six runs on seven hits over five and a third. Lundahl and Lee both scored before the end of the inning against reliever Tyson Corley with Lundahl's run going on Rasner's line. Jesus Sucre led off the seventh with his second homer as a Pelican, and Cody Johnson crushed his Carolina League-leading 25th an inning later, a two-run shot to provide the final margin. In all, the Pelicans cranked out 15 hits on the night, one shy of a season high.
On the flip side, Pelicans starter Jacob Thompson cruised through six innings, not allowing multiple men on base at the same time once. South Carolina native Justin Greene doubled with one out in the sixth and came around on a Brent Morel RBI single. Thompson (4-2) yielded to the Myrtle Beach bullpen in the seventh with Pat Currin and Michael Broadway closing the door on the win.
Game two of this three-game set is scheduled for a 7:00 PM start Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Myrtle Beach will send right-hander Erik Cordier (4-4, 3.59) to oppose Winston-Salem's Johnnie Lowe (7-4, 4.31). Following a three-game set with the Potomac Nationals next week, the Pelicans return home to host the Kinston Indians for a four-game series from July 30 through August 2. Tickets for all Pelicans home games are available at the BB&T Coastal Field box office, by calling (843)918-6000 or by visiting the Tickets page at MyrtleBeachPelicans.com.
