Potomac Nationals News Release

TODAY: The Potomac Nationals will look to even up their series with the Salem Red Sox in tonight's middle-game from Salem Memorial Ballpark with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m. The P-Nats lost their starting pitcher and eventually the whole ballgame in the opener and will look to bounce back against the first place Red Sox on the road. The Nationals' 18-10 record since the All-Star Break is still the best in the Carolina League and the defending Mills Cup champions still own the best overall record in the league at 55-40.

Salem is 17-10 and currently lead the South by 3.5 games over First Half champion Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach. Potomac still leads the season-series 8-6 including a 6-2 mark from Salem Memorial Ballpark. The P-Nats swept the Sox in their last series away from Pfitzner Stadium from June 1-3 that included two one-run games and one contest decided by just two scores. Despite leading the season series with their state rivals, Potomac is hitting just .229 against the Red Sox this season. Salem has done a great job against the heart of the Nats' batting order as sluggers Chris Marrero and Michael Burgess are combined on a .168 batting average against the Sox with just three homers and 32 strikeouts in 107 at-bats.

TODAY'S OPPOSING STARTER: RHP Kyle Weiland, was the 3rd round pick of the Boston Red Sox in the 2008 Draft out of the University of Notre Dame. Standing 6-4 and weighing 195 pounds, this Albuquerque, NM native spent all of 2008 with the Lowell Spinners of the New York-Penn League (SS-A). He appeared in 15 games, 10 starts, for the Spinners compiling a record of 3-3 with a 1.50 ERA and held opponents to just a .166 batting average in 60.0 IP. He was the Red Sox Minor League Pitcher of the Month in August after not allowing a single earned run in five consecutive starts from August 6-27. He is Notre Dame's All-time leader with 25 saves in his college career and averaged 9.2 strikeouts per 9.0 IP as a Junior for the Irish.

Saturday night will mark the fifth time Weiland has toed the rubber against the defending Mills Cup champions with Weiland carrying a 1-1 record with a 3.93 ERA to the mound against the Nationals this season. After struggling in his initial two outing against the P-Nats (0-1, 8ER/8.1IP, 8.64 ERA), Weiland has thrown 10.0 shutout frames in his last two starts vs. Potomac including a two-hit performance over five frames on June 3. That was the righty's first of several quality appearances in the month of June as the New Mexico native allowed just one earned run in 27.2 innings (0.33 ERA) in five starts. Opponents are hitting just .209 against Weiland since the All-Star Break.
