Potomac Nationals (55-40, 18-10) @ Salem Red Sox (49-47, 17-10)

Game #97

Lewis-Gale Field - Salem, VA - Home Game #51

Probable Starters: LHP Will Atwood (5-6, 4.87) vs. RHP Kyle Weiland (3-7, 3.92)

Big Shot Che-Hsuan Lin belted his sixth dinger of the season last night, Salem's first homer since Nava went yard eight days ago in Lynchburg. The Red Sox are 11-3 since the All- Star Break and 30-9 this season when one of their players goes deep in a game.

Sox Scoring First in the Second Half: After scoring first only 22 times in 69 games in the first half, the Sox are 14-for-27 in the second half in getting on the board first. Salem is now 26 -10 when they score first this season. Despite the recent suc- cess, the Sox have trailed at some point in 76 of their 96 games on the year.

Fife a Control Freak: Salem righthander Stephen Fife picked up his first Carolina League victory and his first win in 2009 in Salem's 4-2 Thursday triumph over Frederick. Using a fan- tastic arsenal of multiple pitches all thrown for strikes, Fife has set the standard for his superb control. In 48 innings pitched this season, Fife has compiled 47 strikeouts while only walking four batters, an unbelievable 11.75:1 ratio.

Keep it Rolling: With six wins in the their past eight games, the Red Sox have ascended to two-games above .500 for the first time since May 18 when they were 20-18. Salem's high- water mark for the year occurred on May 5 when the Red Sox were 15-11, four games above .500. Dating back to the first half, the Red Sox have won 24 of their past 36 games since they were a season-high ten games below .500 on June 10.

Three-Pronged Attack: Salem pounded ten hits in their series opening-win against Potomac, with 80% of the offense com- ing from a trio of bats. Anthony Rizzo went 4-4, his first four- hit effort since he went 4-5 in the South Atlantic League against Kannapolis on April 21. Daniel Nava belted a pair of doubles, his fourth and fifth extra-base hits during the home- stand. Che-Hsuan Lin went 2-4 with a walk and two RBI. Lin jacked his sixth homer of the season in the fifth, a two-run shot off Potomac reliever Patrick McCoy.

Pivotal Thievery: When the Red Sox swipe a bag, they win. While not necessarily that simple, the trend has been set that year and success has been correlated with baserunning. On the season, Salem is a fantastic 35-15 when they steal a base, but just 14-32 when they are unable to muster a steal. The Red Sox are sixth in the Carolina League with 78 stolen bases on the season, but they are third in success-rate (72.2%) as they've only been caught 30 times.
