Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

The Chicago Cubs have announced the following roster moves affecting the Myrtle Beach Pelicans:

-OF Shawon Dunston Jr. has been traded to the San Francisco Giants organization.

-OF Daniel Spingola has been assigned to Myrtle Beach from Low-A South Bend. He will wear No. 17.

Dunston Jr. played in 37 games with Myrtle Beach in 2016, batting .219/.299/.342 with six doubles, four triples and five RBIs. He also stole seven bases in eight attempts. Dunston Jr. was a member of the Pelicans 2015 Carolina League championship squad during an injury-marred campaign that saw him play in just 17 games with the Birds. The son of 18-year MLB veteran Shawon Dunston, who was the No. 1 overall pick in 1982 by the Cubs, Dunston Jr. also won the Midwest League title in 2014 with Low-A Kane County. During that season, he batted .268/.304/.381 with two home runs, 37 RBIs and 27 steals in 96 games. The trade brings Dunston Jr. into the Giants organization, where his father currently works.

Spingola batted .309/.377/.368 in 38 games with Low-A South Bend this season. The Georgia Tech product was actually drafted by the Cubs twice; in the 24th round of the 2014 draft and then in the 31st round in 2015. Following signing with Chicago in 2015, Spingola played in 12 games between Rookie-level Mesa, Short Season Class A Eugene and Low-A South Bend, hitting .314/.375/.543. He was a Second Team All-ACC honoree at Georgia Tech in 2014.

The Pelicans' roster sits at 25 active players.
