Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release

LYNCHBURG, Va. - Three Myrtle Beach Pelicans recorded multiple hits, but the Birds left 10 men on base in a 7-1 loss to the Lynchburg Hillcats Friday at Calvin Falwell Field at Lynchburg City Stadium.

Rashad Crawford, Jeffrey Baez and Erick Castillo each had two hits but the Pelicans (32-28) went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position, leaving 10 men on.

The struggles started early for Myrtle Beach. Against Lynchburg (39-21) starter Nick Pasquale (2-1), the Pelicans wasted a single and two walks to leave the bases loaded in the top of the first.

In a scoreless game in the bottom of the first, Jonathan Martinez (3-4) hit Hillcats DH Anthony Santander with two outs and nobody on. The next batter was Bobby Bradley, who launched a two-run home run off the scoreboard in right-center to give Lynchburg a 2-0 lead.

With the same score in the second, Martinez walked Mark Mathias with one out. Paul Hendrix followed with an RBI double to plate Mathias and extend the lead to 3-0. After a strikeout and a walk, Taylor Murphy singled up the middle to make it a 5-0 advantage for Lynchburg.

Martinez worked a scoreless third before allowing a one-out walk to Hendrix in the fourth. The next batter was David Armendariz, who connected on a double to left to give the Cats a 6-0 advantage. Martinez was pulled after four innings, giving up six runs in his shortest outing of the season.

On the other side, Pasquale went five shutout innings for Lynchburg, surrendering just two hits while striking out four.

Down 6-0 in the top of the sixth, Antonio Romero walked the bases loaded before getting an out. Baez followed and singled to left to get the Pelicans on the board and make it 6-1. However, Luke Eubank was able to induce an inning-ending double play to get out of the jam.

Eubank, Cameron Hill and Trevor Frank combined to shut out Myrtle Beach over the final three innings to seal a 7-1 win.

Lynchburg has outscored Myrtle Beach 16-4 over the first two games of the series.

The teams will meet again on Saturday, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Zach Hedges (5-4, 2.39) gets the start for Myrtle Beach, while Julian Merryweather (7-1, 0.92) makes up the other half of the premier matchup. Coverage begins at 6:15 p.m. on MyrtleBeachPelicans.com/Broadcast, the MiLB First Pitch app and TuneIn.
