Frederick Keys News Release

Woodbridge, VA - Potomac scored five times in the first two innings and Boone Whiting tossed 6 2/3 scoreless frames to net a 6-0 win over the Keys Friday night at Pfitzner Stadium. The Keys recorded two hits in the game and were handed their fifth shutout loss of the season

Matthew Grimes entered the game with the second-best ERA in the Carolina League at 1.08, but the Nationals wasted no time in taking a lead. Andrew Stevenson and Osvaldo Abreu, the initial two batters of the first, roped back-to-back triples to snap Grimes' 28 scoreless inning streak. Jose Marmolejos then doubled off the right field wall to score Abreu to make it 2-0.

Frederick's Aderlin Rodriguez singled to kick off the second inning, however was left stranded at third base by Whiting. Two errors in the inning, one on Whiting (6-2), put two runners on base, but Josh Hart grounded into a force out to end the threat.

In the bottom half, Potomac scored three more times. Drew Vettleson singled and stole second with David Masters at the dish. Masters earned an 11-pitch walk and Vettleson took off for third on the free pass to place runners on the corners. Khayyan Norfork grabbed an RBI with a sacrifice fly, while with two outs, Abreu walked to move Masters to second. Marmolejos singled up the center for a 4-0 edge and Raudy Read brought in Abreu for a three-run inning.

Austin Urban allowed one run on two hits in his first inning of work. Drew Ward doubled to center and Alec Keller followed with a base hit up the middle for a 6-0 cushion in the fifth. Urban tossed two innings, while Jeff Beliveau logged the final two innings.

The Keys went 19 batters without a hit after the Rodriguez single in the second. In the seventh, Jomar Reyes smacked a single through the right hole after Conor Bierfeldt walked to push Whiting out of the game. Wirkin Estevez took over, left Bierfeldt and Reyes on the bags, and fired the last 2 1/3 innings without allowing a hit.

The Keys and Nationals continue their five-game, four-day series with a doubleheader Saturday night starting at 5:00 p.m. It is the third double-dipper between the two teams this year. Neither team has announced a starter. The broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com.
