Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - Malcom Nuñez drove in four and Blake Sabol picked up three hits in Altoona's 7-5 series opening victory at Prince George's Stadium on Tuesday night.
Nuñez smashed a first inning three-run homer to give Altoona the early lead. His 20th homer of the season, third with Altoona, supported Quinn Priester's 11th start in a Curve uniform. Priester limited Bowie to just one baserunner in each of his first two innings on the mound and got two more runs of support on an Endy Rodriguez two-run homer in the third inning.
Bowie took advantage of a Curve error in the third and got a run back on an RBI double from Cesar Prieto, and added three more off Priester in the fifth inning after an error extended the inning. Toby Welk hit a bases-clearing double to make it a 6-4 game, but Matt Fraizer's throw from the left field corner hit the relay man Liover Peguero in perfect position to cut down the final run at the plate.
Bowie made it a one-run game on an RBI single from Connor Norby in the sixth inning off Nick Dombkowski, however, Altoona's lefty out of the bullpen managed to keep the Baysox at bay by striking out Hudson Haskin to finish the inning. Priester allowed a season-high five runs, one earned, on seven hits and one walk in 5.1 innings pitched. He struck out three and threw 78 pitches, 53 strikes.
Altoona got clean innings of relief from Kyle Nicolas, J.C. Flowers and Tyler Samaniego to lock down the win. Samaniego picked up his tenth save of the season in the victory.
Blake Sabol added his 29th multi-hit game of the season, but added a key insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to give the Curve a 7-5 advantage. Nuñez finished his night with a Curve-high four RBI after he added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning of the series opening win.
Altoona and Bowie continue their six-game series on Wednesday night at 6:35 p.m. RHP Brennan Hanifee will start for Bowie, with Altoona's starter to be determined.
