Richmond Rallies to Shock Ducks 8-5 in 10 Innings

Summary

The Richmond Flying Squirrels score seven runs in the final five innings to come from behind and down the Akron RubberDucks 8-5 in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Canal Park.

Turning Point

After knotting the game in the seventh, Richmond looked to put a cherry on top of the comeback in the tenth. A Shane Matheny RBI single opened the inning to make it 5-4 Richmond. A Tristan Peters double brought home two more before a Casey Schmitt RBI single made it 8-4 Flying Squirrels.

Mound Presence

Thomas Ponticelli got the start for Akron and looked strong in his four start for the RubberDucks. Despite a RBI groundout in the second and a leadoff walk that came around to score in the sixth, Ponticelli was flawless going five plus innings allowing two runs on two hits while punching out four. Eli Lingos followed with an inning and two thirds allowing two runs. Cade Smith followed with two and third scoreless with six strikeouts. Carlos Vargas did not retire a batter in the tenth allowing four runs (three earned). Randy Labaut tossed a scoreless inning in relief of Vargas.

Duck Tales

The RubberDucks took the lead first when Bryan Lavastida launched a solo home run to make it 1-0 Akron two batters into the bottom of the first. Jose Tena gave the lead back in the second when he singled home Raynel Delgado to make it 2-1 RubberDucks. Tena added on to the lead in the fourth Tena doubled home Delgado and Escobedo to make it 4-1 Akron. Micah Pries came to bat in the bottom of the ninth and lifted a long hard fly ball to dead center that died on the warning track to force extra innings.

Notebook

Smith's six strikeouts are the most this season...Tena and Escobedo each extended hitting streaks to four games...Game Time: 3:03...Attendance: 2,740.

On the Pond

The RubberDucks will continue their series with the Richmond Flying Squirrels on Wednesday, August 24 at 6:35 p.m. at Canal Park. Righty Tanner Burns (2-5, 3.80 ERA) will get the start for Akron against Richmond right-hander Kai-Wei Teng (5-9, 5.10 ERA).
