Koss Records Three Hits including 20th Double in Loss Box Score Play-by-Play Portland, Maine - Christian Koss went 3-for-4 with two RBI and a runs scored as the Portland Sea Dogs (56-59, 25-21) dropped the series opener 12-6 to the Hartford Yard Goats (67-47, 24-21) on Tuesday at Hadlock Field.
The Yard Goats started the scoring in the top of the first inning against Sea Dogs pitcher Brian Van Belle. Zac Veen led off with a single and Kyle Datres walked. One out later, Aaron Schunk singled to center, scoring Veen to make it 1-0. Grant Lavigne followed with a two-run double, increasing the Hartford lead to 3-0. Brenton Doyle reached on a fielding error and Willie MacIver drove in the final run, capping off the first inning with a 4-0 lead.
Portland was able to get one run back in the bottom of the first against Hartford starter Noah Davis. David Hamilton led off with a walk and stole second base. One out later, Hamilton stole third. Ceddanne Rafaela walked, and Christian Koss knocked in Hamilton with a base hit, making it a 4-1 game.
Hartford got back to work at the plate in the top of the fifth inning against Portland reliever Kyle Hart. Datres rekindled the scoring with a two-run homer. Julio Carreras, Hunter Stovall, and Zac Veen all collected RBI hits, increasing the Yard Goats lead to 10-1.
The Sea Dogs continued to fight back in the bottom of the sixth inning with Yard Goats reliever Dugan Darnell on the mound. Koss started the action with a one-out base hit. Niko Kavadas reached on an infield single, putting runners at first and third. Alex Binelas cleared the bases with a three-run homer, making it a 10-4 game.
Portland added two more runs in the bottom of the seventh with Darnell still on the mound. Elih Marrero was hit by a pitch and Hamilton singled to place runners at first and third. Wilyer Abreu walked to load the bases and Ceddanne Rafaela brought in the first run by grounding into a double play. Koss kept things going with an RBI double to right, cutting into Hartford's lead, 10-6.
The Yard Goats added a run in the eighth and ninth innings. Lavigne knocked in Daniel Montano with a groundout. In the ninth, Julio Carreras led off with a triple and Veen brought him in with a sacrifice fly. Portland was silent in the bottom of the ninth, giving way to a 12-6 Hartford win.
Davis (8-7, 5.91 ERA) picked up the win, pitching 5.0 innings while allowing five runs on five hits, walking one, and striking out one. Van Belle (4-4, 4.50 ERA) recorded two outs, surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits and two walks in his fourth loss of the season.
The Sea Dogs and Yard Goats play the second game of a six-game series at 6:00 PM on Wednesday at Hadlock Field. Portland sends RHP Bryan Mata (4-2, 2.11 ERA) to the mound against Hartford RHP Mike Ruff (1-2, 5.29 ERA). Trevor Story is expected to join the Sea Dogs on an MLB rehab assignment.
