Stockton Ports News Release

The Modesto Nuts swept a doubleheader from the Stockton Ports, taking the first game 4-1, and the nightcap 4-0, in front of 4,242 fans at Banner Island Ballpark.

The first game saw two highly touted right-handers, Jason Windsor for the Ports and Ubaldo Jimenez for the Nuts square off. Each pitcher allowed one run. Windsor struck out eleven, while walking just one. The Ports picked up their lone run on a John McCurdy homerun in the sixth inning. The game was tied after seven innings, the regularly scheduled length for a minor league doubleheader, and so the Ports played their second extra inning game of the year.

With the game tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, Ports reliever Elvis Avendano began his second inning of work, and immediately ran into trouble. Seth Smith doubled, and after a sacrifice bunt, Avendano intentionally walked Chris Ianetta. Modesto leftfielder Joe Gaetti made him pay with a three run homer that provided the final margin in Modesto's 4-1 victory.

The nightcap pitted two pitchers, Chris Dunwell for the Ports and Alberto Arias for the Nuts who hadn't started a game yet this year. Each pitcher was solid, although Arias was better.

Modesto prospect Ian Stewart was the star of the second game, driving home three of the Nuts four runs. In the third inning, Dunwell issued a leadoff walk to Simon Ferrer who advanced to third on Luis Gaunce's flared single to centerfield. Stewart drove home Ferrer with a single through the right side of the Ports infield. The game was still 1-0 until Stewart came to bat in the fifth inning with a runner at first against Ports reliever Manny Rodriguez. Stewart launched a long homerun to dead centerfield directly over the batter's eye for his second big fly in as many nights.

Stockton managed just four hits in the nightcap on their way to being shut out for the first time in 2005. Eddie Cornejo, who went 2-3, was the only Port with two hits.
