
Modesto Sweeps Double Header From Stockton

STOCKTON -- The Modesto Nuts swept a double header from the Stockton Ports Saturday, winning the first game 4-1 and shutting out the Ports in Game Two, 4-0. With the wins Modesto goes two games over .500 for the first time since April 22nd and move into sole possession of second place in the Northern Division of the California League.
In the first game, Joe Gaetti hit a three-run home run of Elvis Avendano in the top of the ninth inning to break a 1-1 tie. It was Gaetti's seventh home run of the season and his second in as many nights. Jud Thigpen's RBI double in the fourth inning held up until John McCurdy tied the game with a home run in the sixth off starter Ubaldo Jimenez. Jason Burch pitched two scoreless innings and Jim Miller pitched the ninth inning to pick up his league-leading tenth save of the season.
In the night cap, Alberto Arias, Mark Kaiser and Manual Corpas teamed up for a five-hit combined shutout, 4-0. Ian Stewart drove in three runs with a single and his second home run in as many nights. Luis Guance later added an RBI single.
The series concludes Sunday afternoon as Modesto sends Tomas Santiago to the mound against the Ports' Danielin Acevedo. Game time at Banner Island Ballpark is 1:05 p.m
