Nunez's Strong Start Drives Ems to Second Straight Win
June 20, 2019 - Northwest League (NWL1)
Eugene Emeralds News Release
For the third straight night, the Emeralds caught enough breaks and took advantage of mistakes on their way to a 3-1 win over the Canadians in front of 5,513 fans at Nat Bailey Stadium in Vancouver
Eduarniel Nunez set the tone from the onset, as he fired 5.0 strong innings in his first start of the season, pairing a devastating fastball with a hard-breaking curveball to fool the Canadians offense in the early going. Nunez racked up 4 strikeouts across his 5.0 innings of work.
Coming into the game, Reivaj Garcia was 1-for-12 to start his season, but he put that streak to an end in his first at-bat. With two outs and Yonathan Perlaza at second base in the second inning, Garcia laced a 0-1 pitch off starter Nick Fraze into center field for a base hit, scoring Perlaza and giving the Emeralds a 1-0 lead.
Fraze finished his first professional start with 3.0 innings pitched, surrendering one run and a strikeout.
The Ems caught a break in the fifth inning to pad the lead. With Reivaj Garcia on third base with two outs, Luis Vazquez rolled a grounder towards shortstop Luis Vazquez rolled a grounder towards shortstop Luis de los Santos. De los Santos charged the ball, but it glanced off the heel of his glove. Unable to make the play, Garcia scored from third to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Canadians would answer in the bottom half of the inning as Dominic Abbadessa stole second and third base after a one-out single, eventually scoring on an RBI groundout from Adrian Ramos, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Maikel Aguiar entered from the bullpen to relieve Nunez, and he pitched a clean sixth and seventh innings, before Fernando Kelli blooped an RBI double in the ninth to score Perlaza, padding the lead at 3-1.
Enrique de los Santos shut the door in the eighth and ninth innings to earn his first save of the season, giving the Ems back-to-back wins in Vancouver.
The finale of the four-game series is Thursday afternoon, a special 1:05pm start. Zach Mort will make his second start of the season for the Ems, opposed by Adam Kloffenstein of the Canadians. Pat Zajac will have the play-by-play duties beginning at 12:50pm on 95.3FM The Score.
