Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

Severino Brilliant, But 'Birds Fall

IronBirds' RHP Janser Severino was fantastic in his first start of 2014, as he pitched six innings of three-hit, shutout baseball. He tied a career high with nine strikeouts. He also induced two groundball double plays, and had a strikeout-caught stealing double play in the first inning. The nine strikeouts for Severino were the most since his final outing in 2011, with the DSL Orioles. On August 15 of that year, Severino went seven innings and struck out nine, earning a win. Unfortunately for Severino and the IronBirds, last night did not produce the same result. Hunter Lockwood hit a walk-off two-run home run to left-center field and the Renegades took the first game of the 2014 season, 2-1.

Gonzalez Impressive in Professional Debut

IronBirds' CF Jay Gonzalez was impressive in his professional debut last night. He led off the game with a bunt single on a 3-1 count, and also beat out an infield single and stole second in the 9th. He also made several nice plays in center field, showing off his speed. Gonzalez stole 51 bases for the University of Mount Olive (NC) this past season.

Lartiguez Off to Hot Start

OF Oswill Lartiguez led the IronBirds with a 3-4 night at the plate. After striking out in the second inning, Lartiguez hit singles in each of his final three at-bats. He also recorded two catches in the outfield.

Veloz Flashes Power Again

IronBirds' 1B Hector Veloz showed off his power bat again last night. With two outs in the top of the 8th inning, Veloz got a hold of an Edgar Gomez pitch and crushed it over the left field wall. At the time, it gave Aberdeen a 1-0 lead. Veloz hit five home runs last season with the IronBirds and had one with the Delmarva Shorebirds earlier this season.

On the mound tonight...

The IronBirds will send out LHP Stephen Tarpley to the mound. Tarpley, drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 3rd round of the 2013 draft, will be making his IronBirds' debut. He pitched all of last season with the GCL Orioles, going 0-1 with a 2.14 ERA over seven starts. He will be opposed by the Renegades' RHP Enderson Franco. Franco was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2013 Rule 5 draft (Triple-A phase) from the Houston Astros.
