Lake Monsters double-up on Lowell
June 14, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
LOWELL, MA --- A.J. Burke struckout nine Spinners over five innings and the Lake Monsters offense scored all six of its runs over the first three innings as Vermont picked up its first win of the young New York-Penn League season with a 6-3 victory over Lowell at LeLecheur Park on Saturday evening.
Burke, a 31st-round pick in the 2013 draft out of Wesstern Oregon University, allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and did not walk a batter to go along with his nine strikeouts. It was the most strikeouts in a road game for a Lake Monsters pitcher since August 31, 2011. Burke allowed a leadoff homer to Nick Moore in the third inning and two more hits in the fifth, including an RBI single to Deiner Lopez.
Vermont got on the board quickly in the first as Dayton Alexander walked with one out, advanced to third on a Scott Masik double and scored on a Joe Bennie groundout. The Lake Monsters took advantage of a Lowell error in the second to score a pair of unearned runs for a 3-0 lead, including a two-out RBI bunt single from Brett Vertigan.
Then in the third Vermont put together five straight one-out hits, including three doubles, to plate three runs for a 6-0 lead. Back-to-back doubles from Bennie and Justin Higley scored the first run of the inning, then after Andy Paz lined a two-run double into the leftfield corner.
Victor Veliz came on in relief of Burke to start the sixth and tossed three scoreless innings on one hit before running into trouble in the ninth. A leadoff walk and single put two runners aboard for the Spinners, who then loaded the bases with no outs on a walk by Fernand Cruzado. Lowell cut the deficit to 6-3 on a Bryan Hudson RBI groundout, but Cruzado got a popout and groundout to close out the win for Vermont with his first save.
Higley and Bennie both went 2-for-5 with a run, double and RBI for the Lake Monsters, while Vertigan and Masik both added a pair of hits in Vermont's 11-hit night. Moore was 2-for-4 with the solo homer for Lowell, while starter Heri Quevedo (0-1) was charged with six runs (four earned) on seven hits over three innings to take the loss.
The Lake Monsters and Spinners will wrap up the three-game series in Lowell on Sunday beginning at 1:05 pm. Vermont then returns home to historic Centennial Field for the home opener against the Connecticut Tigers on Monday starting at 7:05 pm. It will be the first of a seven-game homestand for the Lake Monsters through Sunday, June 22nd.
