Jammers Come up Just Short on Opening Night

June 14, 2014 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Jamestown Jammers News Release

Jamestown, NY - After an off-season full of anticipation, the 2014 season finally kicked off in front of an amazing crowd at the historic Diethrick Park. Unfortunately, despite the combined 11 hits, and 6 RBIs of Carl Anderson, Taylor Gushue, Kevin Ross and Ulises Montilla, the Jammers late comeback attempt came up just short in a 10-9 loss to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers.

Jammers starter, Miguel Rosario, fell victim to some bad luck in the first inning. The Scrappers collected five hits in the inning all together, but three were infield singles. When all was said and done, after the top of the first, the Jammers found themselves in an early hole, trailing 4-0.

Jamestown responded with one run in the bottom of the inning after a lead-off single by Carl Anderson (2014 19th Round Pick), and a 2-out double by Kevin Ross.

Playing from behind the whole game, the Jammers continued to show resilience, and managed to keep clawing their way back into the game. Trailing 6-1 heading into the bottom of the third, Erik Lunde (2014 18th Round Pick) knocked in Carl Anderson with a double, and Kevin Ross collected another RBI on an infield single, which would score Lunde.

Jamestown would go on to add two runs in the fourth after a lead-off single by Mike Fransoso, a double by Ulises Montilla, an RBI groundout by Francisco Aponte, and an RBI single Enyel Vallejo. In the fifth, 2014 fourth round draft pick, Taylor Gushue, connected on his first professional home run.

Still trailing 10-6 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Jammers would push across two more runs. Anderson collected another of his four hits on the night, a single, which scored Enyel Vallejo. Then, Kevin Ross would come up big again, with another RBI single which scored Anderson.

The Scrappers lead shrunk to just one in the bottom of the eighth. Anderson would reach yet again on an infield single, and would be brought home on a triple from Gushue. Mahoning Valley reliever, James Stokes, would settle in from there however, and shut down the Jammers for the rest of the eighth.

Montilla tried to get a rally started for the Jammers in the bottom of the ninth with an infield single, and then advancing to second on a throwing error. But, Stokes managed to bare down and collect the save.

Game two of the four game series will be tonight at 7:05 pm. Marek Minarik, a right-handed pitcher from the Czech Republic, will take the mound for the Jammers. He will be opposed by Mahoning Valley starter, Juan Santana. Before the game, the Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce will be holding the first ever "Touch a Truck" event in the county right outside the ballpark. The event will take place at 4:30, and will showcase some of the unique vehicles from several industries throughout the local community. Also, the first 500 fans through the gate will receive a magnet schedule courtesy of CSEA.
