Hudson Valley Renegades News Release
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY - Thunder and lightning delayed the 2014 season opener for the Hudson Valley Renegades at Dutchess Stadium, however, lightning would strike again later that evening off the bat of Hunter Lockwood in the Renegades inaugural game of their New York-Penn League campaign.
In a contest that featured stellar pitching from both sides and a few key defensive plays, the game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning, when the IronBirds struck first. Aberdeen's Hector Veloz connected on a two-strike changeup that he lined over the leftfield wall, giving Aberdeen the game's first lead. That lead would hold up until the bottom of the ninth inning when Hunter Lockwood provided the heroics.
Down 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth inning with one out, Bralin Jackson started the rally with a line drive single up the middle. That brought Lockwood to the plate, and he provided the opening night crowd of 4,324 with lightning in a bottle, crushing a 2-2 changeup over the centerfield wall for the walk off victory.
Howard College product Hunter Wood was stellar on the mound in his Hudson Valley Renegades debut. He threw 4 scoreless innings, striking out 6 before he turned the game over to a trio of Renegades relievers. D.J. Slaton, Edgar Gomez and Issac Gil were very effective in relieving Wood. Gil earned his first win of the season by throwing a scoreless ninth inning.
Lockwood ended the game going 3 for 4 on the night with the big blow coming in dramatic fashion that sent the capacity crowd at Dutchess stadium in a total frenzy as the Renegades earned their first win of the season.
