Brockton Rox News Release
Brockton, MA (August 13, 2007) - RHP Derek Drage struck out RF Tony Gonzalez with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to curtail a late Rox rally and end a five-game Rox winning streak as North Shore topped Brockton 6-5 before 2,031 at Campanelli Stadium. The five- game winning streak was the Rox's longest of the season but the Rox are now six games back of the Spirit in the race for the second-half crown. The Rox scored two runs in the ninth frame without the benefit of a base hit but stranded the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position. RHP Mike McTamney took the loss for the Rox, allowing six runs (four earned) in 7.1 innings pitched.
The Rox scored in the first inning against former teammate RHP Gary Galvez when 2B Alex Nunez ripped a one-out triple to right, scoring pitches later on a 1B Francisco Lebron groundout. In the second, Nunez committed two costly errors, allowing the Spirit to score two unearned runs and take a 2-1 lead. In the third the teams exchanged solo runs, with former Rox LF Mike Torres ripping an RBI single for the Spirit and the Rox closing the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame. In the fifth, the Rox tied the game at three when SS Andre Alvarado raced home from third base as LF Jeremy Coronado was caught stealing second.
In the sixth, Spirit SS Jerson Perez's two-out RBI single gave the Spirit a 4-3 lead, and they added two more runs in the eighth off McTamney with a Torres RBI triple and a 3B Luis Lopez run-scoring double. With a three-run ninth inning lead, Spirit closer RHP Derek Drage came in to pitch and walked the bases loaded. Facing Lebron, the potential winning run at the plate, Drage issued his fourth walk of the inning, forcing home a run. DH John Allen's cue-shot groundball went for an error, allowing the Rox to pull within one at 6-5. Drage settled down to strike out Gonzalez on three-pitches, preserving his tenth save of the year, and giving his teammate Galvez his fifth win. The Spirit now own a 6-5 advantage in the season- series over the Rox.
Coronado and Nunez each had multi-hit games, while Lebron drove in two and walked three times. Torres had three hits and a pair of RBI for the Spirit.
Tuesday at Campanelli Stadium in Game 2 of the three-game set, LHP Bryan Morse (3-5, 4.15 ERA) faces his former team for the second straight start. Morse fired a one-hit shutout against the Spirit last Thursday, taking a no-hitter into the ninth. He faces RHP Matt Bishop (7-4, 2.20 ERA) at 7:05 PM.
