Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Nashua, NH -- Righty Matt Weagle received zero runs of support for the second straight start and third time in his last four starts, as the Nashua Pride broke things open with a big 5th inning and cruised to a 8-1 win over the Tornadoes at Holman Stadium on Monday night.
Weagle (1-5) began the bottom of the 1st inning by serving up his league-high 15th home run of the season, as John Ramistella took him deep to left. After that, Weagle settled down and pitched very well until running into trouble in the 5th. Bryan Duplissie led off with a double and took third on a bunt single by Jermy Acey. Acey was then caught stealing second base as Duplissie scored on a delayed double steal. Rich Giannotti followed with a triple and back-to-back singles chases Weagle from the game. Shaun McNamara took over and allowed both inherited runners to score, as the Pride led 5-0 after 5 innings.
The Tornadoes got one back in the top of the 6th on a two-out double by Yohanny Valera and an RBI single by Rico Santana, but that would be all that lefty Beau Hintz (1-0) would allow. After working his was out of a jam in the 2nd, Hintz retired 11 Tornadoes hitters in a row at one point, tossing 7 innings in all and allowing just the one run. The Pride put things away in the 8th off righty John Birtwell, using a Chris Colabello solo home run and a blown call at first base by Lou Acello to score three more runs and provide the final margin.
Hintz (1-0) picked up the win and Weagle (1-5) took the loss. The Tornadoes offense has averaged exactly 2 runs per start (28 runs in 14 starts) for Weagle this season, and none in three of his last four outings. Worcester is 3-24 when scoring fewer than 4 runs. The Tornadoes have now scored three or fewer runs in 8 of their last 10 games. The Tornadoes will try to get back on a winning track on Tuesday night when they send righty Ryan Mitchell to the mound opposite Nashua righty Hideki Nagasaka. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
