Norfolk wins over Gwinnett
August 17, 2012 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release
Luis Exposito led off the 10th inning with a home run to right field, powering the Tides to a 3-2 win over the Gwinnett Braves in front of 8,732 fans Friday night at Harbor Park.
Norfolk trailed the game 2-1 entering the ninth inning, but Ryan Adams led off the frame with a single before Ryan Flaherty knotted the score with a triple to right-center field. Gwinnett reliever Peter Moylan escaped further damage, however, by striking out Bill Hall and Ronny Paulino before retiring L.J. Hoes on a ground out to send the game to extra innings.
That set the stage for Exposito, who launched a 3-1 offering from Ryan Buchter (0-1) over the party deck in right field to lift the Tides to just their second win of 2012 when trailing after eight innings. Norfolk entered the contest 1-48 when trailing after eight, including 0-21 at home.
Exposito's walk-off homer was his second of 2012 and came just two and a half weeks after he belted a walk-off blast in the 12th inning of a July 30 game vs. Durham.
With the win, Norfolk pulled to within 4.0 games of Pawtucket for first place in the IL Wild Card standings.
Tides starter Jake Arrieta turned in a very strong effort, as he took his first no-decision in seven starts with Norfolk. He allowed three hits and two walks while striking out eight in 6.2 innings, throwing 62 of his 98 pitches for strikes.
The only trouble Arrieta ran into came in the second, as he allowed a single to Ruben Gotay before a two-run homer off the bat of Rusty Ryal. After yielding the home run, Arrieta retired 16 of the final 18 batters he faced.
Norfolk picked up its first run on a third inning solo homer by Blake Davis. The home run extended Davis' hitting streak to seven games, over which he's batted .520 (13-for-25) with six RBI.
The extra-inning contest was Norfolk's 19th of the season, the most in the International League.
The Tides will welcome the Charlotte Knights to town Saturday night for a brief two-game set, with first pitch set for 7:15. Saturday is Susan G. Komen Night at Harbor Park, as the first 2,000 ladies 18 & over will receive a pink tote bag courtesy of Michael & Son Services. The Tides will wear pink jerseys in the contest, and the bases will also be painted pink to help raise awareness for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
