Tides Edge G-Braves in 10 Innings

NORFOLK, VA. - Norfolk designated hitter Luis Exposito hit a solo home run off Gwinnett reliever Ryan Buchter to lead off the top of the 10th, propelling the Tides to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the G-Braves in the series finale at Harbor Park on Friday night.

The G-Braves entered the bottom of the ninth inning with a 2-1 lead, but could not hold on. Peter Moylan came in to pitch and gave up a leadoff single to center. Ryan Flaherty followed with his first hit of the series, a triple that scored Adam to tie the game, 2-2. The Tides brought in Xavier Avery as a pinch runner to replace Flaherty at third, but Moylan came back to record the next three outs, sending the game to extra frames.

The game was pretty much a pitching duel from the beginning with starters Sean Gilmartin of Gwinnett and Jake Arrieta of Norfolk both in top form. The G-Braves broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second as Ruben Gotay drove a one-out single to right and Rusty Ryal (2) followed with a two-run homer to give Gwinnett a 2-0 lead.

Gilmartin retired the first eight batters of the game, but gave up a solo home run to last batter in the Tides order, Blake Davis (3), with two outs in the third, cutting the G-Braves lead, 2-1.

Gilmartin, in his fourth Triple-A start, worked 5.0 scoreless, as he surrendered just one hit, one earned run, one walk and struck out six. He left the game in line for the win and was replaced by Miguel Batista who worked 2.0 scoreless with one walk and one strikeout. Anthony Varvaro pitched a scoreless eighth with one walk. Moylan was charged with one earned run, alongside two hits and two strikeouts in the ninth. Buchter (L, 0-1) gave up the winning home run to the first batter he faced, fifth pitch, in the 10th.

Arrieta went 6.2 innings with three hits, two earned runs, two walks and eight strikeouts. Former Atlanta pitcher Oscar Villarreal worked 2.1 scoreless with two strikeouts and Greg Burke (W, 1-1) worked a scoreless top of the 10th for the win.

Gwinnett had just three hits in the game, as the Ryal homer was his only hit in four at-bats. Gotay and Josh Kroeger both were 1-for-4 with a single. Meanwhile, Norfolk (64-63) could only muster four hits, as Adams, Flaherty and Exposito were each 1-for-4 and Davis was 1-for-2.

The Gwinnett Braves (57-71) head to Durham for a two-game series against the Bulls (59-69) at Durham Bulls Athletic Park. Right-hander Randall Delgado (3-2, 4.94) will take the mound for the G-Braves against the Bulls right-hander Jim Paduch (5-9, 5.63) with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. in Durham, North Carolina.
