Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, dropped the series finale of their four-game set with the Toledo Mud Hens, 6-2, on Friday night at Alliance Bank Stadium in front of a season-high crowd of 10,989. Corey Brown knocked his 23rd home run of the season in the loss.
Danny Dorn delivered Toledo (52-76) a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning. The first baseman lined a solo home run deep to right field off of Syracuse starter Yunesky Maya.
Although Eury Perez led the Chiefs' third inning off with a single and proceeded to steal both second and third base, Syracuse was unable to score until the fifth against Drew Smyly. In that frame, Brett Carroll reached second courtesy of a leadoff single and a Perez sacrifice bunt. Corey Brown then put Syracuse on top, 2-1, with a two-run homer into the Family Park in right field.
Syracuse's (62-66) 2-1 lead lasted into the eighth, thanks to Maya. Despite allowing the Dorn dinger, the right-hander from Cuba scattered six hits, walked only one, and struck out two in seven innings. Maya's biggest out of the night came in the sixth when he fanned Dorn with the bases loaded and two out.
Things turned south for the North Siders, though, when they went to Mike MacDougal and the bullpen in the eighth. The first batter MacDougal faced, Justin Henry, tied the game, 2-2, with his first home run since 2010. MacDougal then walked two of the next three Hens he faced before he was relieved in favor of Christian Garcia. The Chiefs' closer didn't fair much better, however, as he threw a wild pitch with Dorn at bat to put John Lindsey and Don Kelly on second and third, respectively.
Dorn gave Toledo a 3-2 lead it wouldn't relinquish, as he guided a single to right. The next batter, Ben Guez, similarly singled to plate a run and put the Chiefs down 4-2. Danny Worth followed without a grounder to shortstop that ended up causing trouble when Zach Walters made a throwing error that enabled the Hens to load the bases. After the error, Bryan Holaday scored Dorn to make it 5-2 with an infield groundout. Toledo tacked on a sixth run in the ninth against Chiefs reliever Pat Lehman.
Brown's homer notwithstanding, Syracuse's offense lacked firepower. Yet the Chiefs still managed to make things interesting in their last turn at bat. Hens reliever Bruce Rondon walked the bases loaded, setting the stage for Brown to come up as the tying run. But Syracuse's All-Star grounded back to Rondon to end the game.
Luis Marte earned the win for the visitors, as he struck out six batters over two and one-third innings.
The Chiefs commence a new four-game series on Saturday night at Alliance Bank Stadium at 7:00, as the Indianapolis Indians venture to the Salt City. Left-hander John Lannan is scheduled to throw for the Chiefs on what is Syracuse Baseball Wall of Fame Night. Stu Pederson, Scott McGregor, Frank Riccelli, Philip S. Ryder, and Dan Clark will be inducted as the Class of 2012 in a pregame ceremony.
