Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Pawtucket, RI - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees tied a season high with four home runs and moved a season high three games in front of the Pawtucket Red Sox in the International League North with an 8-6 win over the Red Sox in the final game of a five game series at McCoy Stadium
The Yankees drew first blood in the bottom of the first inning on Corban Joseph's 11th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field off Pawtucket starter Zach Stewart for a 1-0 advantage.
The story on the night for the Red Sox was one of missed opportunity against Yankees starter Adam Warren. Despite picking up 10 hits and drawing four walks (one intentional) off Warren, Pawtucket managed just two runs with the starter in the game. The Red Sox left nine on base against Warren over his five innings and had three runners thrown out at home plate.
Each time that Pawtucket put runs across home plate, the Yankees had an answer. After the Red Sox run in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Jon Hee, SWB picked up a run in the bottom of the inning with Stewart's two out walk to Chris Dickerson and Joseph's RBI double to right center giving the Yankees a 2-1 lead.
The Red Sox would tie the game in the fourth at 2-2 on a J.C. Linares RBI single off Warren scoring Mike Rivera who was the first of three straight Red Sox hitters to reach base to open the inning. Once again, the Yankees had an answer in the bottom of the inning when Darnell McDonald slugged a three run homer to left. It was McDonald's second homer of the season as well as the second homer hit by McDonald off the Paw Sox right hander. The first was a solo shot at Frontier Field in Rochester against Stewart on July 31st.
Stewart pitched through the sixth inning allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts. With the loss he dropped to 3-4 on the season. Right hander Jose De La Torre took over for Stewart to start the seventh inning and was greeted by Ramiro Pena's solo homer over the right field fence into the Yankees bullpen to extend the lead to 6-2.
Melky Mesa's homer in the eighth inning of De La Rosa caused quite a stir in the bottom of the eighth inning. Mesa's drive down the line in left field was initially called foul which drew SWB Manager Dave Miley out of the dugout to question the ruling. After the umpires gathered and overturned the call prompting an eruption from the Pawtucket dugout that led to the ejection of Manager Arnie Beyeler, Pitching Coach Rich Sauveur following the homer. After the inning De La Torre was tossed as well.
Pawtucket made things a little more interesting in the ninth inning with a pair of homers off reliever Cory Wade, who came in replacing Preston Claiborne to start the top of the eighth. Claiborne retired all six Pawtucket hitters he faced over two innings striking out four batters. Wade allowed a two run homer to Linares and a solo homer to Hee to close out the scoring at 8-5.
With the win the Yankees improve to 72-56 and move to three games in front of Pawtucket in the International League's North Division. Pawtucket drops to 69-59 with the loss.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens a two game series at Frontier Field on Saturday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch against the Red Wings. The Yankees will send left hander Mike O'Connor (2-6, 3.94) to the mound, while Rochester will counter with right hander Shairon Martis (2-2, 5.89).
