Holt's Homer Leads Tribe Past Wings 4-3

Indianapolis Indians News Release

ROCHESTER, N.Y. --The first home run of shortstop Brock Holt's Triple-A career proved to be the game-winner on Friday night as the Indianapolis Indians avoided a series sweep with a 4-3 win over the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field.

It's been a memorable run for Holt, who went 3-for-5 in the contest and has now produced multiple hits in five straight games. It was his first hit of Friday night that was the most notable, however.

With Indianapolis having already scored a run in the second inning on an RBI groundout by 2B Chase d'Arnaud, Holt stepped up to the plate with two on and two out, taking a strike before launching a three-run home run over the right-field fence. It was the first home run of the young shortstop's Triple-A career -- and also his first three RBI.

Holt also singled in the fifth inning and doubled in the seventh, but it was his home run that proved to be the difference in the ballgame. In ten games with Indianapolis, Holt is batting .410 (16-for-39) -- and during a five-game hitting streak, .520 (13-for-25).

The jolt from Holt delivered RHP Chris Leroux his third win of the season. Leroux (5.0 IP, 8 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 2 BB, 5 K, 1 HR) had arguably his 'worst' outing since joining the starting rotation, allowing a season-high three earned runs, but is 3-0 with a 1.50 ERA in five starts this season.

Leroux's best asset on Friday night was damage control as the Red Wings scored one run apiece in each of the second, third and fourth innings. In the second inning, 3B Eduardo Escobar hit an RBI ground-rule double with just one out, but Leroux induced a popout and a flyout to end the rally.

It was a slightly different story in the third, when 1B Chris Parmelee hit his 16th home run of the season with two outs before Leroux recorded a strikeout to end the frame. Then in the fourth, Escobar hit a one-out RBI single but Leroux dialed up a pair of punchouts to end the frame with the game's final score at 4-3.

In support of Leroux, RHP Even Meek (2,0 IP, 1 H, 4 K) tossed a pair of scoreless innings -- recording four strikeouts -- and RHP Bryan Morris (1.0 IP, 1 H, 2 K) tossed a scoreless eighth with two strikeouts. In the ninth inning, RHP Tim Wood (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K) allowed one hit but induced a game-ending 5-4-3 double play to earn his 18th save of the season.

For Rochester, RHP Liam Hendriks took the loss, falling to 9-3 on seven innings with seven hits and four earned runs. It was certainly not a probable outcome from Hendriks (7.0 IP, 7 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 3 BB, 6 K, 1 HR) considering what the Perth, Australia, native had done to the Indians at Victory Field on June 9 when he stymied the Tribe for 8.2 innings and recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts.

The win for Indianapolis was important not only from a morale standpoint -- the Tribe has not been swept in a four-game series since May 15-18 at Lehigh Valley -- but also from a playoff perspective. With Columbus also winning, the Tribe's victory lowered the magic number to clinch the International League West title to nine.

The Indians have announced that RHP Phil Irwin will make his Triple-A debut in Saturday's game one in Syracuse. The Chiefs are expected to send LHP John Lannan (7-11, 4.99) to the mound for the 7 p.m. start.

The game will be carried on WNDE 1260 AM-WFBQ-HD2, WNDE.com and via iheartradio, a mobile application for iPhone, Blackberry and Android phones with Howard Kellman and Will Flemming on the call. The pre-game show begins at 6:40 p.m.
