Norfolk splits opening pair at home

NORFOLK, VA - The Admirals split their opening matches of the 2005-06 campaign against Bridgeport this past weekend. The Sound Tigers outscored the Admirals 4-1 in the final 30 minutes of play as they spoiled Norfolk's home opener by a 7-4 final on October 7th. The next night, the Ads jumped out to a 4-2 advantage at the end of two. After Bridgeport took a 5-4 lead, Nathan Barrett sent the contest into overtime when he scored with 11 seconds left in regulation. James Wisniewski gave Norfolk a 6-5 win, lighting the lamp at 3:38 of overtime.

The Admirals host the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (Pittsburgh) on Friday, October 14th, following which they play their first road game of the season at the Hershey Bears (Washington) on Saturday, October 15th.

STANDINGS
At 1-1-0-0 (2 pts), Norfolk is currently fourth in the East. The division is led by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton (3-0-0-0, 6 pts) with Philadelphia (2-0-0-0, 4 pts) second and Bridgeport (1-1-0-1, 3 pts) third. Binghamton (0-0-1-0,) and Hershey (0-1-0-1) trail the Admirals with one point each.

TEAM NOTEBOOK
- Norfolk's 7-4 loss to Bridgeport on October 7th was only the club's second opening night loss in six AHL seasons. The team had won four consecutive season openers since dropping its first AHL contest to Hershey in 2000.
- The Admirals and Sound Tigers combined for 22 goals in their back-to-back matches this past weekend. Norfolk's previous team record for combined goals in consecutive games was 19 set twice in 2001-02 and again in 2004-05.
- On October 7th, D/RW Dustin Byfuglien notched his first two professional goals and points.
- RW Steve Crampton netted his first AHL points with a goal and two assists on October 8th.
- C Colin Fraser scored his first pro regular season goal and registered his first pro assist on October 8th.
- D Brent Seabrook tied a Blackhawks team record for assists and points by a rookie in one game when he assisted on four goals in Chicago's 6-3 win over San Jose on October 7th.
