Cleveland Barons News Release
10/08/05 Cleveland 1 - Rochester 4 - Craig Valette scored the Barons first goal of the season 5:40 into the first period to take the early lead. Steve Bernier notched his first professional point with an assist on the goal. Rochester came back halfway through the second period when the Amerks found their stride and took the lead with 1:19 remaining in the period. Rochester secured the victory by tallying two more goals in the third. The Barons outshot the Amerks 31-26 in the game, but were unable to find the net on 10 powerplay opportunities. Goaltender Nolan Schaefer made 22 saves in the loss.
Coming Up
10/12/05 Cleveland vs. Grand Rapids - National City Rink in The Q
The Barons will welcome the Grand Rapids Griffins into town Wednesday for the first of eight match-ups this season. Grand Rapids has started the season strong, beating the Milwaukee Admirals 6-3 Saturday. Forwards Jiri Hudler and Kent McDonell each recorded four points in the victory. The Barons are 8-12-0-1-1 lifetime against the Griffins. Barons goaltender Dimitri Patzold is 3-1-0-1 with a 2.13 goals-against-average and .914 saves percentage all time against Grand Rapids.
10/14/05 Cleveland @ Toronto - Ricoh Coliseum
The Barons will get their first look at the Toronto Marlies on Friday when they face off in Toronto. A new team for the 05-06 season, Toronto lost their season opener in Rochester Friday night 8-5. Forward Colin Murphy had two goals in the game, and center John Pohl picked up a goal and an assist in the loss.
10/15/05 Cleveland vs. Milwaukee - National City Rink in The Q
The Milwaukee Admirals will come to town on Saturday, October 15th when the Barons look to get their first victory against the Admirals since a 3-1 win on 1/25/03. The 2004 Calder Cup Champions lost their season opener to the Grand Rapids Griffins 6-3 Saturday.
Barons Player of the Week
The Cleveland Barons Player of the Week is Craig Valette. The left wing scored the Barons first goal of the season Saturday. He also recorded three shots on the night and finished the game +1. The 6-foot, 210-pound Valette had 12 points (6-6-12) in 79 games last season.
Moving Up
The Barons 2004-05 MVP Ryane Clowe made his NHL Debut with the San Jose Sharks Wednesday at Nashville and on Friday, the Barons 2004-05 Rookie of the Year Josh Gorges appeared in his first NHL game, also with the Sharks. In total, there are 10 former Barons on the Sharks opening day roster: Vesa Toskala, Jim Fahey, Rob Davison, Christian Ehrhoff, Gorges, Niko Dimitrakos, Marcel Goc, Clowe, Jonathan Cheechoo, and Milan Michalek
First Things First
Steve Bernier, a right wing, notched his first professional point, an assist, against Rochester on Saturday. The first round draft pick (16th overall, 2003 NHL Entry Draft) ended the week with one point (assist) and two penalty minutes.
It's Worth a Shot
Tim Conboy recorded a game-high five shots on goal in Saturday's loss to Rochester. In total, the Barons out-shot the Amerks 31-26 in the game.
Barons Partner With Red Cross
All proceeds from the Barons concourse activities during Saturday's game against Rochester were donated to the American Red Cross, Greater Cleveland Chapter. Additionally, as part of a league-wide initiative for the Red Cross, all team captains wore a special patch on their jersey. The jerseys worn by league captains were autographed following the game and will be auctioned off on www.theahl.com.
WDOK Breakaway with the Barons
The Cleveland Barons will host the first National City Breakaway with the Barons presented by WDOK on Monday, October 17th at Hamilton Ice Arena in Rocky River at 5:30pm. The Barons will hold a one-hour practice that is open to the public. Following the practice, the Barons will take the ice with the fans. It is the perfect opportunity to get autographs from and photographs with the team.
