Norfolk Tides News Release
Norfolk got a strong start from Joe Gunkel and another outstanding effort from its bullpen, but four Scranton hurlers combined to limit the Tides to three hits as Norfolk dropped a 2-0 decision Saturday night at Harbor Park.
Gunkel (1-3) turned in his second consecutive stellar start, as he allowed two runs on five hits over six innings of work. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out a season-high six and walked just one, but suffered the loss as Norfolk was shutout for the second consecutive contest. Over his last two outings, Gunkel has now allowed two runs on eight hits over 15.0 innings of work.
Zach Phillips and Oliver Drake followed Gunkel's effort with three shutout innings of relief. The duo allowed one hit and struck out three, continuing a string of strong outings from the Tides bullpen. Over the last six games, Norfolk's relievers have now posted a 0.42 ERA (1 ER, 21.1 IP) with 18 strikeouts and just 14 hits allowed.
Scranton took the lead in the third frame on a one-out home run by catcher Kyle Higashioka, his first career Triple-A homer. The RailRiders extended their advantage to 2-0 in the sixth inning on a two-out RBI single by former Tide Chris Parmelee.
Trey Mancini had two of Norfolk's three hits, while Francisco Pena added a walk and a single.
Nassawadox native Tyler Webb got the start for Scranton and limited the Tides to four hits over four innings of work. Layne Somsen (1-0), Conor Mullee and Anthony Swarzak combined on the shutout, Norfolk's 10th shutout defeat of the season.
The two clubs wrap up their three-game set Sunday afternoon at Harbor Park, with first pitch set for 1:05. Left-hander T.J. McFarland (1-1, 1.93) is slated to come off the disabled list and start for Norfolk and will be opposed by right-hander Brady Lail (2-0, 2.87). On Sunday, the first 4,000 fans will receive a collectable player photo of Trey Mancini, courtesy of Sprint and Hot 100.5 FM.
