Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE - In the first Sunday home game of the year at McCormick Field, The Asheville Tourists and the Greensboro Grasshoppers played another classic. The Tourists attempted to overcome an early deficit all the way until the bottom of ninth; that's when Asheville forced extras.

In the tenth inning, Greensboro scored seven runs and Asheville tallied three. The final score of 11-7 is in no way indicative of how close the game was and how difficult it was to score runs through the eight innings.

Greensboro took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and Asheville plated one in the bottom of the second. The score remained 2-1 until the seventh. Both teams had opportunities they failed to capitalize on as the starting pitchers, Antonio Santos and Brady Puckett, both dazzled.

The teams exchanged runs over the next two innings and the Tourists entered the bottom of the ninth down 4-2. Steven Linkous and Matt McLaughlin each delivered two-out RBI base hits to tie the score. Asheville had a chance to win it in the ninth but left the winning run at third base.

The tenth inning was a completely different ballgame. The Grasshoppers began the top of the tenth with a sacrifice bunt. The next eight batters all reached base with either a hit or a walk. The visitors scored seven runs and led 11-4.

Asheville continued to fight in the bottom of the tenth. Bret Boswell ripped an RBI double and Chad Spanberger blasted a two-run Home Run. The Tourists came one base-runner shy of bringing the tying run to the plate and were unable to complete a three-game sweep.

Following Monday's day off, Asheville will take on the Charleston RiverDogs for a three-game road series.
