Crawdads Win in Wild Walkoff

Hickory, NC - The 'Dads won Sunday afternoon against the Delmarva Shorebirds on a wild walkoff to cap the homestand. Left fielder Miguel Aparicio dashed home for the winning run as catcher Melvin Novoa was caught in a rundown following a wild pitch. The 'Dads won the game 7-6

Sunday's victory was the first Crawdads walkoff on a wild pitch in five seasons. The last Crawdads walkoff win came last season on August 3rdin a game also against the Shorebirds.

The Shorebirds started the scoring in the top of third inning on a single past the glove of the diving first baseman Yohel Pozo that brought in two runs.

The 'Dads responded in the bottom of the third with a two out double by catcher Melvin Novoa that gave the Crawdads their first run of the game and drove Shorebirds starting pitcher DL Hall out of the game.

'Dads starter Reid Anderson finished the afternoon with six innings pitched and two earned runs allowed. Right hander Dario Beltre took over for Anderson and allowed the first four batters to reach and three runs to come in. He exited with a runner on third that scored off of Crawdads reliever Josh Advocate that increased the Shorebird's lead to 6-1.

The Crawdads got a run back in the bottom of the inning on a groundout by centerfielder Eric Jenkins with the bases loaded. The 'Dads cut away at the deficit in the bottom of the eighth with a two run single by third baseman Tyler Ratliff that put the 'Dads behind by two.

The 'Dads bats stayed hot in the ninth inning. Shortstop Yonny Hernandez and Jenkins walked in back to back at bats. Left fielder Miguel Aparicio hit a groundball that was dropped by the Delmarva shortstop trying to put a tag on Jenkins as he slid into second. Novoa tied the game with a single to left. Designated hitter Sam Huff came to the plate with Novoa at first and Aparicio at third. Novoa got stuck in a pickle following a wild pitch. While Novoa was trying to escape a tag, Aparicio sprinted home for the game's winning run.

The Crawdads are on the road until May 9th, when they return for the first Kids Win Wednesday of the season. Thursday, May 10thwill be Dunder Mifflin Night and Thirsty Thursday. Crawmoms weekend will kick off the following night with a post-game fireworks show. Throughout the weekend the Crawdads will be playing as the Crawmoms, wearing special caps and jerseys. On Saturday, there will be a replica jersey giveaway for the first 1,000 fans, courtesy of Pepsi. Crawmoms weekend will wrap on Mother's Day so the first 100 mothers will receive a carnation thanks to Whitfield's Flowers and more. Wine and Design will also be teaching a class on the picnic deck at Sunday's game. Tickets for the next homestand and all Crawdads home games are available at:
