
No late heroics tonight: Kernels beat Beloit, 8-1

August 18, 2008 - No late inning heroics were needed as the Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Beloit Snappers, 8-1, on Monday night at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels scored eight unanswered runs over their final four innings as they kept pace with first place Burlington in the MWL Western Division playoff race.
Kernels starter Esmerlin Jimenez (6-7) allowed a run on seven hits, walked five and struck out three over seven innings for the win. Tim Kiely and Chris Armstrong each pitched a scoreless inning out of the Kernels bullpen.
Gabe Jacobo continues to swing a hot bat as he was 2-4 with a triple and RBI. Jay Brossman was 1-2 with a triple and two runs scored and Andrew Romine was 1-5 with 2 RBI. Alberto Rosario and Hector Estrella each had two hits and an RBI and Jeremy Moore was 2-3 with two walks and a run scored.
Beloit starter David Bromberg (7-10) allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits, walked four and struck out seven over six innings in taking the loss. Former Kernel Alexi Casilla, on a rehab assignment with the Twins, was 1-3 with two walks and Rene Leveret was 1-3 with an RBI.
The Kernels improve to 32-25 in the second half (64-61 overall) and now lead Quad Cities by three games and Beloit by four games for the second half wild card playoff spot. Beloit falls to 28-29 and 64-61 overall.
The final game of this four game home stand is Tuesday night at 7 pm. It's the final 1600 ESPN Triple Play Tuesday of the season: enjoy a combo meal of a regular sandwich, snack and beverage for just six bucks. Gates open at 6 pm and first pitch is scheduled for 7 o'clock.
